Use your phone’s built-in search to look for an app, setting, contact, file, or other content: swipe down on an iPhone Home Screen for Spotlight, swipe up on a Galaxy for Finder, or swipe up on a Pixel to reach Home Screen search. Type what you remember and open a result. If it is missing, search inside the relevant app; system search does not index every app or item. To identify text or an object currently on screen, use Circle to Search instead, if your device supports it.
Search on an iPhone with Spotlight
- From the Home Screen, swipe down from the middle of the screen to open Spotlight. On Face ID models, you can also tap the Search button on the Home Screen if it is shown.
- Type a name, phrase, or other detail, then tap the result you want.
Spotlight can show apps, contacts, system results, suggestions, and supported content from apps such as Mail and Messages. It can also find text recognized in photos with Live Text and search webpages or images in your photo library. Searching for an app may show shortcuts to common actions.
When Spotlight does not find something
Third-party app content appears only when the app supports Spotlight search. Open that app and use its own search field or button instead. If you do not see an in-app search control, Apple says to swipe down within the app. You can manage an app’s participation at Settings > Search: select the app and adjust its search settings. Related-content and recent-search controls vary by iOS release. To disable location-based suggestions, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Suggestions & Search. Search on a Samsung Galaxy with Finder
- Swipe up from the Home screen to open the Apps screen.
- Tap Finder or the search field at the top, enter a search term, and open a result.
Finder can search settings and compatible app content, including email content and files, and can find installed apps. Its appearance and placement vary by model, carrier, and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy navigation guide explains the Apps-screen Finder route.

Home Finder and Apps-screen Finder are not identical
On Galaxy S26 series devices running One UI 8.5 or later, Samsung documents a Home Finder option that must be enabled in Home screen settings. Home Finder does not show suggested apps, so use Finder on the Apps screen when you are trying to find an app. The “Choose apps to search in” control is in Finder’s three-dot menu on earlier software; on One UI 9, Samsung places it under Finder > More options > Settings. If you cannot find Finder or a control, check Settings > About phone > Software information for your One UI version, then try Apps-screen Finder or search directly in the relevant app. See Samsung’s Finder guide for these version-specific details.
Search for a file name in My Files
For a download or a file whose name you know, open My Files > Downloads, tap Search, and enter the file name. Samsung notes that menu names and layouts can vary with model and software. Its My Files guide covers finding and managing files.

Search on a Google Pixel
- Swipe up from the Home screen to reveal the search bar.
- Enter a query and tap a result. To search the web only, tap the Home Screen search bar.
Depending on the device and available content, Pixel search results can include apps and app content, web results, contacts, settings, Google Play apps, screenshots, Assistant actions, and Pixel tips. You can choose which apps appear at Home settings > Search settings > Control search results. Google specifically lists searches for information in Gmail, Clock and alarms, Messages, Drive, and Photos on Pixel 11 series; do not assume that same in-app coverage on every Pixel. Search for something visible on screen with Circle to Search
Circle to Search is for finding or learning about text and objects already displayed on your screen, without first switching apps. It is a separate workflow from typing a remembered name into Spotlight, Finder, or Pixel search.

- On a supported device, press and hold the Home button or the navigation handle at the bottom of the screen until the search interface appears.
- Circle, highlight, scribble over, or tap the text or object you want to search.
Google lists Circle to Search on Pixel 6 and later. Samsung describes it on select Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later. These eligibility statements do not guarantee availability on every model, region, carrier, or configuration. If the gesture is absent, check your model and software and look for the Circle to Search or “Hold home/handle to search” setting. Built-in search is a starting point, not a guarantee that every app or item is indexed. When the system results do not include what you need, search in the relevant app; for a Galaxy filename, try My Files directly.
