Vanilla has not been shown to heal wounds in people. Laboratory studies of vanillin—a compound associated with vanilla—and experimental vanillin-containing materials have reported effects relevant to wound research, but they do not establish that eating vanilla or putting vanilla extract or vanillin powder on a wound is safe or effective.
What researchers mean by “vanilla”
Vanilla is a flavoring; vanillin is one compound associated with its flavor. The studies discussed here examined purified vanillin or experimental materials containing it—not ordinary vanilla beans, kitchen extract, or a consumer wound-care product. Results for those research preparations cannot be assumed to apply to food or flavoring products.
What the studies found
A 2023 cell experiment
A 2023 study tested vanillin in cultured human keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, cells relevant to skin. The authors reported more than 80% cell survival after exposure to 10–500 μM vanillin. That is a cell-survival result under laboratory conditions, not a wound-healing rate or proof of safety on a person’s skin. The researchers also used hydrogen peroxide to induce oxidative stress and a scratch assay to examine cell migration. A scratch assay is a laboratory model; it does not show that a wound in a patient closes faster. The authors suggested the findings might support future wound-dressing or wound-healing research, not that a treatment is established. Read the 2023 study.
Chitosan–vanillin materials and animal observations
A 2021 review describes research on chitosan–vanillin materials and reported observations in rat skin, including angiogenic stimulus, collagen deposition, re-epithelialization, and changes in inflammatory markers. These are preclinical findings involving an experimental material, not evidence that vanilla treats human wounds. The review notes that the findings had not been replicated in humans and that clinical trials were needed. Read the 2021 review.

A 2025 diabetic-wound cell model
A 2025 study examined vanillin and photobiomodulation in diabetic wounded fibroblast cells. It reported the best effect in that model with 6 μg/mL vanillin plus photobiomodulation. The experiment used cells, not people with diabetic wounds; it does not establish a clinical dose or recommend applying vanillin or using light therapy on a wound. Read the 2025 study.
Reviews describe a developing research area
A 2026 review surveys proposed roles for vanillin in chronic-wound research, including oxidative stress, immune responses, antimicrobial activity, and biomaterials. It says standardized evaluation and further mechanistic and translational studies are still needed before clinical use. Its authors write: “Addressing these gaps is essential to define structure–function relationships, validate safety and efficacy, and advance clinical translation.” Read the 2026 review.

A 2024 critical review also discusses wound-healing claims within broader research on vanillin and its derivatives, while noting limited human clinical trials. That broad discussion should not be read as proof of wound-healing benefit in people. Read the 2024 review.
What this means if you have a wound
The evidence described here does not support eating vanilla, applying vanilla extract, or using vanillin powder as wound treatment. Nor does it establish a vanillin product as a substitute for wound care. Cell migration, cell-survival measures, animal observations, and experimental materials are different kinds of evidence from showing that a treatment safely improves healing in people.

For a wound that is not healing or appears infected, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional rather than trying a food or flavoring ingredient. This is especially important for a person with diabetes, because the cited diabetic-wound study was a laboratory cell experiment and does not provide a treatment instruction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What evidence would establish a treatment?
For vanillin to be considered a wound treatment, research would need to evaluate a defined formulation, dose, and route in people, with appropriate safety monitoring and clinically meaningful healing outcomes. The available sources describe laboratory and preclinical research and do not establish human wound-healing efficacy.
