Belagavi’s KLS Gogte Institute of Technology (KLS GIT) and Purosil Performance Hose LLP signed a memorandum of understanding on September 23, 2026, to collaborate on sustainable materials and engineering applications. KLS GIT says the planned work includes a life-cycle assessment (LCA) comparing silicone hose with EPDM hose. The announcement reports no results from that study, and a proposed sustainable-materials center remains an idea the partners will explore—not an operating facility.
What the KLS GIT–Purosil MoU announces
KLS GIT’s account identifies the signatories as KLS GIT Principal Dr. V. A. Athavale and Purosil Performance Hose LLP CEO Dr. Thomas M. Garrett. Other people attended the signing, but the institutional post does not identify them as signatories. The stated collaboration covers sustainable materials and engineering applications. KLS GIT’s announcement describes a planned LCA of silicone hose and EPDM hose; it does not provide a study protocol, completed analysis, or comparative findings.
A center is under consideration
The partners also plan to explore a Centre for Sustainable Materials, Engineering and Industrial Commercialization within KLS GIT’s Research, Innovation and Development (GRID) framework. The announcement describes this as a possibility to explore, not a center that has already been established.
What “Biocongruent Chemistry” means in this report
An October 6, 2026, India Live report matching the MoU story frames the wider work as “Biocongruent Chemistry.” It describes materials designed to meet performance and service-life needs while interacting more constructively with natural transformation processes at end of life. The report says the work examines soy- and lignin-based building blocks and other bio-derived components.

That report places the broader effort in an international research context involving MCPU Polymer Engineering, KLS GIT, Purosil, the National Institute for Materials Advancement, and LCA Design. Their presence in that wider context does not make those organizations signatories to the KLS GIT–Purosil MoU. The technical framework and the MoU text are not available in the cited material, so the phrase should be understood as the report’s framing rather than a fully established technical definition.
Has the new study shown silicone hose is more sustainable than EPDM?
No result from the LCA announced by KLS GIT has been reported in its post. A separate Rubber World trade report describes a related comparison of silicone rubber heater hose with an EPDM counterpart. It says a cradle-to-grave LCA found roughly one-third the lifetime carbon footprint for the silicone hose after accounting for service life and replacement frequency. The primary study and its methods were not available for review, and this reported comparison is not a result of the newly announced KLS GIT–Purosil project.

Purosil’s own sustainability page argues that its silicone hoses generally last longer than EPDM hoses and discusses recyclability and end-of-life outcomes. Those are company claims, not independent findings that establish a universal advantage for silicone. The company also notes that sustainability depends on manufacturing energy, product use, and recycling.
What a useful hose LCA needs to compare
A material label alone cannot settle which hose has a lower environmental impact. A fair comparison must evaluate hoses performing the same job over a defined period or duty cycle. Important choices include:

- Functional unit and service life: What quantity of hose service is being compared, and how long must each product perform it?
- Replacement frequency: If one hose lasts longer, the assessment needs to count the additional hoses and associated impacts required to deliver equivalent service.
- Performance and maintenance: The comparison should reflect the intended operating conditions, performance requirements, and maintenance—not assume that nominally similar materials are interchangeable in every application.
- Manufacturing impacts: Production energy and material inputs can affect the result.
- End-of-life route: Recycling, disposal, or other treatment should be represented realistically rather than treated as an automatic benefit.
- System boundary: A cradle-to-grave assessment includes more life-cycle stages than a cradle-to-gate product footprint, so figures from different boundaries are not directly interchangeable.
The reported heater-hose comparison says it normalized for service life and replacement frequency. KLS GIT’s announcement does not say whether its planned study will use that approach or specify its functional unit and system boundary.
Why other silicone LCA figures do not answer the hose question
A 2026 peer-reviewed Green Chemistry study by Kunz, Salahudeen and Mejía assesses a representative room-temperature-vulcanizing (RTV-1) silicone sealant and prospective recycling processes—not Purosil hose. It reports 5.79 kg CO₂-equivalent per kilogram for a representative virgin sealant in a cradle-to-gate model, attributes 82% of that modeled footprint to PDMS synthesis, and estimates 1.83 kg CO₂-equivalent per kilogram for KOH-catalyzed regenerated PDMS. Incorporating recycled PDMS reduced modeled product-level emissions by up to 55%.

Those are study-specific estimates, not measurements of a hose or the MoU project. They illustrate why production choices and end-of-life assumptions can change an LCA result, but differences in product, system boundary, and functional unit prevent using them as a direct silicone-versus-EPDM hose comparison.

The confirmed development is a research collaboration: KLS GIT and Purosil signed the MoU on September 23, 2026, and KLS GIT says a silicone-versus-EPDM hose LCA is planned. The announcement does not establish which material has the lower life-cycle impact. The proposed center, wider “Biocongruent Chemistry” work, and separate reported heater-hose comparison should be kept distinct from results of the planned study.
