Undead Labs studio head Philip Holt later said he wanted the public to know what the studio was making because he worried it might be “swallowed up or divested” before it got the chance to present the game. That was Holt’s stated concern—not proof that Microsoft was about to sell or absorb the studio.
Why did Undead Labs announce State of Decay 3 so early?
In an October 2026 interview with The Game Business, Holt described the announcement as a way to put the game and the studio’s vision on the record. He said: “I was a little worried about getting swallowed up or divested before we had a chance to present to the world what we were working on.”
Holt also characterized the reveal as “a bit of a marker on the table”: it established that State of Decay 3 was in development and gave audiences a trailer showing the studio’s vision. His explanation makes uncertainty about the studio’s future part of the reason for the early announcement, not necessarily the only reason.
Was the game actually in production in 2020?
Not in the sense of a full production effort. Holt said a small team had been working on the project around 2020, but development “didn’t really pick up” until 2022 or 2023. The public reveal therefore came years before the period when work gathered pace.

That distinction helps explain why the 2020 trailer should not be read as evidence that a finished game—or even a mature production—already existed. In an April 2026 report, PC Gamer described the trailer as pre-rendered and conceptual, and reported that Microsoft had requested trailers from key studios ahead of the Xbox Series X/S launch period. That is broader showcase context, separate from Holt’s account of why he wanted the game announced.

What has been shown about State of Decay 3?
In its June 2026 gameplay reveal, Xbox Wire described solo play and shared-world co-op for up to four players, along with settlements and weapon crafting. Creative director Kevin Patzelt said the playable area was about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map. These are developer descriptions, not independently measured comparisons or hands-on findings.

Undead Labs’ September 2026 update said the game remained in alpha, with a closed beta planned before the end of 2026 and a target release in 2027. The studio listed Xbox, Game Pass, PC, and PlayStation as planned platforms. These are plans and targets, not a confirmed release date or guarantee that every platform will launch simultaneously.
