It combines five functions—from medium-voltage power conversion to cooling optimization—and is designed for both hybrid AC/DC and DC-native facilities. ABB says the first DC-native facilities using the complete portfolio are expected to be operational within two to three years of its September 21, 2026, announcement.
What ABB launched
Infinitus is not a single power supply or a consumer product. It is ABB’s proposed source-to-rack architecture: a set of systems intended to bring power into a data center, convert and distribute it, protect DC circuits, and support cooling. The portfolio is aimed first at AI data centers, where increasing rack power can make conventional facility designs harder to scale.
ABB says its solutions can be configured for DC-native facilities or used in hybrid AC/DC designs alongside existing infrastructure. That flexibility matters because operators may need to expand an established AC site rather than replace its power architecture all at once.
The five building blocks
1. Medium-voltage powertrains
These connect the facility to grid power or on-site generation. ABB’s Infinitus solid-state transformer is designed to convert medium-voltage AC directly to 800 VDC using high-frequency solid-state power conversion.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. DC sources and power quality
This function converts AC power to DC outside the data-center white space—the area housing IT equipment—and manages the quality of the resulting supply. ABB presents the conversion location and architecture as choices that can be adapted to a facility’s requirements.
3. DC distribution
Distribution carries DC power through the facility toward the IT load. ABB’s portfolio includes equipment intended to support high-capacity DC distribution, including its SMISSLINE TP HP plug-in distribution system.
4. DC protection
DC protection is designed to detect and interrupt DC overcurrents. It is a distinct requirement of a DC power path, rather than simply a relabeling of the AC protection already installed in a facility.

5. Cooling optimization
ABB includes DC-connected variable-speed drives and motors for cooling systems. The aim is to coordinate facility cooling with changing data-center loads; the release does not provide site-level savings figures for this part of the portfolio.
Why 800 VDC is part of the pitch
ABB’s rationale is that a higher distribution voltage can deliver a given amount of power at lower current. The company says this can reduce conductor requirements, distribution losses, conversion stages, and infrastructure footprint. These are stated design benefits, not independently verified results for a particular operating data center; realized outcomes would depend on the facility and its comparison baseline.
The voltage choice also belongs to a broader architecture decision. Operators need to consider where AC-to-DC conversion occurs, how power is distributed and protected, how cooling and energy management fit together, and whether the building’s layout and energy sources suit a hybrid or DC-native design.

Other technologies ABB presented with Infinitus
In an October 1, 2026, product brief, ABB described several associated technologies. They are enterprise infrastructure and inspection systems, not products intended for ordinary home use.
- MNS 4.0 switchgear and control gear: ABB says the platform builds on a system deployed in nearly 2 million panels globally. The company states that MNS 4.0 will be available to customers in 2027.
- SMISSLINE TP HP: ABB describes this as an 800 A-ampacity plug-in distribution system with a touch-safe design and potential for transition between AC and DC.
- Synchronous condenser package: ABB says it is designed to stabilize the grid interface and provide dynamic reactive power support.
- Modus LTO battery: This lithium-titanate-oxide storage solution is intended to manage rapid data-center demand peaks.
- FIDO robotic inspection technology: FIDO collects thermal, acoustic, and visual data to help inspection teams assess hard-to-reach or hazardous areas.
Hybrid AC/DC or DC-native: what operators need to weigh
| Consideration | Hybrid AC/DC approach | DC-native approach |
|---|---|---|
| Existing infrastructure | Can retain and build around existing AC infrastructure, subject to the facility’s design and retrofit constraints. | Requires a facility planned around DC power paths and compatible equipment. |
| Conversion and distribution | AC and DC systems coexist; conversion locations and interfaces must be designed for the site. | DC distribution is central to the facility architecture, including conversion and protection choices. |
| Facility-specific design | Needs to account for power demand, layout, energy mix, cooling, and the existing electrical system. | Also depends on power demand, layout, energy mix, cooling, and the selected DC equipment. |
| Implementation horizon | ABB positions the portfolio as able to complement existing AC infrastructure; it does not give a separate schedule for hybrid deployments. | ABB expects the first facilities using the complete DC-native portfolio to be installed and operational within two to three years of its September 21, 2026 announcement. |
ABB executive Giampiero Frisio has said the route from AC to DC will depend on each facility’s existing infrastructure and future requirements. The launch therefore does not amount to a recommendation that every data center should switch to DC. The practical question is which power path fits a particular site and its expansion plans.
What ABB’s efficiency and demand figures do—and do not—show
ABB cites an International Energy Agency projection that global data-center electricity demand is expected to more than double by 2030. It also estimates that approximately 25–40% of new data-center capacity installed in 2030 could use DC distribution. Both figures describe future expectations, not measured adoption or demand today.

ABB says next-generation AI chips are expected to draw 1 MW per rack and beyond, compared with almost 200 kW today. This is the company’s 2026 forward-looking statement, not a universal measured rack specification.
ABB reports that an ABB/BCG analysis found more than 5% energy-efficiency gains from DC distribution. That is an analysis claim, and whether a facility achieves a similar gain depends on the site and the assumptions used for comparison. In one scenario for a 500 MW facility, the analysis calculated that a 5% efficiency gain could support 25 MW of additional IT load and more than US$300 million in potential additional annual revenue. Those are scenario outputs, not guaranteed savings or revenue.
ABB also says it has more than 700 DC patents and over 25 years of DC experience. Those company-reported credentials provide context for the launch, but they do not establish the real-world performance of a specific Infinitus installation.

Availability and what remains unproven
The announcement sets a forward-looking horizon for full DC-native facilities: ABB expects the first installations using the complete portfolio to be operational within two to three years of September 21, 2026. MNS 4.0 has a separate stated customer-availability date of 2027. These dates are not a promise that every component or a complete facility will be available on the same schedule.
ABB’s public launch materials do not establish product prices, full technical specifications, or independent site-level performance results. Operators evaluating the portfolio would need project-specific engineering details, equipment compatibility information, and a clear comparison baseline before treating the stated efficiency or capacity benefits as achievable at their own facility.
