The three apps in this guide are Chrome, Gboard, and Gemini. Review their privacy controls on your Android device, then check your Google Account activity settings: app controls and account-level controls are separate, and changing one does not necessarily stop every kind of data collection. Labels and options can vary by device, app version, and account rollout.
Start with your Google Account controls
Google’s Privacy Checkup and My Activity are useful starting points for reviewing saved activity, public profile information, and ad personalization. In your Google Account, open Data & privacy to review the activity controls and ad settings available to you. You can choose whether to pause or delete activity and whether to keep it for personalization and convenience.
Google is gradually updating settings for Search services, including Search and Maps. If a newer service-specific history control is not visible in your account, Google says relevant history and personalized recommendations remain controlled through Web & App Activity. Available labels may therefore differ between accounts.
Review Chrome’s browser and account settings
Chrome activity can exist both in your Google Account and on the device. Deleting items from My Activity does not necessarily delete locally stored Chrome history, cookies, or other browser data. Review both sets of controls.

Check account-level activity
In your Google Account’s Data & privacy settings, review Web & App Activity and ad personalization. You can also check linked third-party apps and services. These controls affect account activity and personalization; they are not a single switch for every kind of information Chrome or a website may handle.
Check Chrome-stored data
In Chrome, open the menu and look for Delete browsing data or the equivalent current label. Review the selected time range and data types before confirming. If you want to retain some browser data, avoid selecting it indiscriminately. Menu wording and placement can change by Chrome version and device.

A secondary article recommending these settings also mentions third-party cookies and Do Not Track. Because those controls and their effects can vary, check the current Chrome privacy settings on your device rather than assuming a particular label is present or that it blocks all tracking.
Review Gboard’s optional data and personalization controls
Open Gboard’s settings from your device’s keyboard settings or the Gboard app, then look for current privacy, personalization, and usage-sharing options. A secondary report lists controls labeled Share usage Statistics, Personalize for you, Improve for Everyone, and Audio donations. Those labels and their descriptions are not established as current or available on every device, so use the options actually shown in your version of Gboard.

Before changing a control, read its on-screen description. You may be able to limit optional usage sharing or personalization while retaining the keyboard features you want; the available balance depends on the current settings offered to your device.
Review Gemini activity and connected apps
In the Gemini app, open your profile or settings and look for the current controls for Gemini activity, retention, and connected apps. A secondary report refers to Gemini Apps Activity or Keep Activity, auto-delete, audio and Gemini Live video or screen-sharing improvement settings, and connected apps. Exact names and paths were not independently confirmed, and can change as the app evolves. Follow the descriptions displayed in your account before enabling or disabling a control.

Review connected apps separately from activity retention. Removing a connection and changing how activity is saved are different choices; one should not be assumed to change the other.

Google says Timeline can be turned off, edited, deleted, or set to auto-delete. However, turning off or deleting Timeline does not necessarily remove every location-related signal from Google services. Other activity settings may retain location information, including general-area or IP-derived information. Review Timeline alongside other Google Account activity controls if your aim is to reduce saved location-related data.

Use Incognito for its limited purpose
Google says Chrome Incognito history and cookies are deleted from the device after all Incognito windows are closed. Maps and YouTube activity in their Incognito modes is not saved to the Google Account. These modes do not provide complete anonymity: websites, networks, and other services may still be able to observe activity in ways that Incognito does not prevent.
Choose settings based on what you want to keep
- Saved history versus convenience: Keeping activity can support personalized experiences and faster searches; pausing or deleting it reduces what is retained in the relevant account controls.
- Auto-delete versus a longer record: Choose a retention period that fits whether you want older activity available or removed automatically.
- Ad personalization versus less tailored ads: Turning off personalization changes how ads are tailored; it does not mean ads disappear.
- Account activity versus app or browser data: Check both account controls and local app/browser settings, because deleting one category does not necessarily clear the other.
Google describes these controls as choices that let people review, pause, and delete data. Its Safety Center puts the rationale simply: “When it comes to privacy, we know one size does not fit all.”
