No, a giant breaking wave is not crossing the Pacific toward California. The headline refers to an oceanic equatorial Kelvin wave: a broad movement of warm water that can affect ocean heat and sea level. It is different from the atmospheric Rossby waves often called planetary waves, and the specific 2026 California-coast projections come from a news report—not from the NOAA background explaining the physics.

What does “planetary wave” mean here?

“Planetary” describes the scale of a pattern, not a wall of water racing toward shore. In this headline, the wave is an oceanic Kelvin wave associated with the tropical Pacific and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It is not a tsunami or a surf wave, and it does not curl and break like a beach wave.

The phrase can also refer to atmospheric longwaves, or Rossby waves. Those are large patterns in the mid-latitude westerly winds; they help shape the jet stream and the paths of surface low-pressure systems. They are a different phenomenon in a different fluid. NOAA notes that the pattern’s speed is not the speed of the wind inside it: “The wave itself is not moving at 100 kt (115 mph / 185 km/h), just the wind within it.” NOAA JetStream’s explanation of longwaves and shortwaves describes atmospheric longwaves as roughly 3,700 miles (6,000 km) to 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or more long.

How does an equatorial Kelvin wave work?

Under ordinary trade winds, warm surface water tends to build up in the western tropical Pacific. If the trade winds weaken, some of that warm upper-ocean water can move east along the equator. This eastward-moving disturbance is an equatorial Kelvin wave.

In a downwelling phase, the warm upper layer pushes the thermocline—the boundary between warmer surface water and colder deep water—farther down. That can leave the upper ocean warmer than average and can raise sea-surface height. An upwelling phase can instead bring colder water closer to the surface. NOAA Climate.gov says an established Kelvin wave typically takes 2–3 months to cross the tropical Pacific.

These waves are part of ENSO physics, but one wave does not establish that El Niño will occur. As NOAA Climate.gov puts it, “The appearance of a downwelling Kelvin wave does not automatically mean an El Niño event is coming.” Subsurface warmth does not translate one-to-one into a particular surface-temperature outcome or guarantee the start of an El Niño event. The equatorial wave discussed here is also distinct from a separate phenomenon called a coastal Kelvin wave.

Is a giant wave headed for California?

No, not in the sense of a breaking wave or tsunami. The Weather Network’s report says a warm Kelvin wave is moving east and describes a possible coastal response after it reaches South America. Its concern is higher coastal water and the way that water could combine with tides—not a single wave arriving at California’s beaches.

Scott Sutherland’s Weather Network article, published September 29, 2026, and updated October 6, 2026, reports sea levels up by as much as half a metre in some areas and projects at least 15 centimetres, potentially twice that, along the west coast in coming months. Those are the article’s reported observations and projections. NOAA’s Kelvin-wave explainer supports the general ocean mechanism; it does not independently confirm those figures or the specific 2026 coastal forecast.

What could higher coastal water mean locally?

Higher background water can matter most when it coincides with high tides, including king tides, and local weather or coastal conditions. The Weather Network report says that combination could contribute to flooding and erosion risk. The Kelvin-wave label by itself does not tell a resident whether, when, or where flooding will occur: local water levels, tides, exposure, and current conditions matter.

  • For a near-term decision, check current official coastal forecasts, tide information, and local emergency or flood advisories.
  • Use the forecast for your specific coastline or community rather than applying a Pacific-wide headline to every location.
  • Treat the reported 2026 projections as claims from The Weather Network unless independently confirmed by current official monitoring.

How the two “planetary wave” meanings differ

Feature Atmospheric Rossby wave Equatorial Kelvin wave
What moves A large-scale pattern in the atmosphere A disturbance involving warm upper-ocean water
Where Mid-latitude westerly winds Along the equatorial Pacific
What it affects Jet-stream configuration and storm tracks Thermocline depth, upper-ocean heat, and sea-surface height
What “planetary” conveys The large scale of the atmospheric pattern The large scale of the ocean disturbance

These are not competing explanations for one physical wave. NOAA’s Teleconnection Introduction provides broader background on large-scale circulation patterns and their influence on weather.
