At Trinity Inlet in Cairns Harbour, Queensland, seagrass meadows recovered to their pre-flooding area and biomass after severe weather-related losses, and fish abundance and species richness recovered strongly. But the fish community did not return in exactly the same form: its mix of species changed. The finding comes from a long-term local record, not a claim that every seagrass meadow recovers this way.
What changed at Trinity Inlet?
Severe weather between 2009 and 2011, including major flooding and Cyclone Yasi, increased turbidity and prolonged poor water quality in the study area. James Cook University (JCU) reports that intertidal seagrass meadow area fell by 98%, fish abundance by 84%, and fish species richness by 73% after those events. These figures describe the reported impacts at Trinity Inlet, not a general rate of decline for seagrass ecosystems.
In its 6 October 2026 account, JCU says seagrass area and biomass later returned to values seen before the flooding. Fish abundance and species richness also recovered strongly, while the community’s species composition differed from the earlier one. In other words, more fish and more species can be present without the same mix of species returning.
What does “recovery” mean here?
Recovery can describe several different ecological measures. Keeping them separate is essential to understanding this result.

- Habitat area and biomass: JCU reports that both returned to pre-flooding values.
- Fish abundance: the number of fish recovered strongly, according to JCU.
- Species richness: the number of species recorded also recovered strongly.
- Assemblage composition: the identities and relative presence of species changed, so the recovered community was not identical to the earlier one.
JCU research lead Darcy Philpott described the distinction this way: “the habitat may recover and fish may return, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you get exactly the same ecological community coming back.” The headline’s “new fish communities” refers to that reorganization; it does not mean every fish was new or that every former species returned.
How long was the record, and what species shifted?
The study draws on a 34-year record spanning 1991–2025, combining long-term fish surveys with records of seagrass condition. JCU says researchers collected more than 11,000 individual animals representing 190 species. That span gives researchers observations from before the major disturbance, through the decline, and into recovery.

JCU reports that Silver Javelin (Pomadasys argenteus) became more prevalent in recovered meadows, while Pikey Bream (Acanthopagrus berda) were more abundant before the flooding. These examples illustrate the reported shift in composition; they do not by themselves explain why the mix changed.

The result shows why a habitat’s physical return is not enough to establish that its ecological community has returned to its former state. At this Queensland site, habitat measures and broad fish measures recovered, but the assemblage followed a different trajectory. JCU co-author Dr Robert Coles said long-term datasets are needed to understand how fish communities respond to major disturbance and subsequent recovery.
