A smart scope is an automated digital telescope built mainly for taking and viewing astrophotos, rather than looking through a traditional eyepiece. In an October 6, 2026, EarthSky article, Marcy Curran describes using an app to choose targets, align and track the telescope, capture images, and stack successive exposures. The appeal is straightforward: much of the setup and image gathering is handled for you, while you can save the results for later processing.

What is a smart scope?

A smart scope, also called a smart telescope, combines a telescope, camera, tracking system, and app-based controls in an all-in-one setup. Its primary output is a digital image on a phone or tablet, not a view through an eyepiece. That makes it a different kind of observing experience from a conventional telescope, which is commonly aimed and used by looking through the optics directly.

Curran’s EarthSky account describes selecting a celestial target in an app, then letting the scope align and track it while it captures images. The device can combine successive images, a process called stacking, to build up detail. The resulting files can be saved and exported for additional processing.

How does using one work?

  1. Set up the scope. Place it on its tripod or mount and connect to its app. Curran notes that carrying and setup are part of the practical experience; she uses a padded tote for her boxy scope and short tripod.
  2. Choose a target. Use the app to select an object to observe or photograph.
  3. Let the scope align and track. The automated system points toward the selected target and follows it during capture.
  4. Capture and stack images. The scope gathers successive images and combines them to reveal more detail than a single exposure may show.
  5. Save or export the result. Images can be kept digitally or exported for further processing. Curran also says some scopes let users program a target and capture window in advance.

This workflow shifts effort away from manually aiming and tracking, but the source does not establish that every model has the same controls, automation, or export options. Check the current specifications and app documentation for the model you are considering.

Why does Curran love her smart scope?

Curran’s enthusiasm is rooted in the experience of making astrophotos without building a traditional telescope-and-camera setup from separate components. She describes enjoying the images she can produce and the convenience of an automated, portable system. Her account is personal experience, not a controlled comparison of telescope performance.

Portability is relative. Curran contrasts a compact smart scope with larger telescopes weighing 70–80 pounds (32–36 kg); that range is her illustrative comparison, not a statistic for the telescope market. Her padded tote is a practical response to the shape and tripod of her own scope, not evidence that all models fit the same carrying solution.

Her camera is described as 2 megapixels, but the EarthSky article does not identify the scope model. That figure should not be treated as typical of smart scopes or as a basis for comparing current products.

Can you use a smart scope in a big city?

Curran says smart scopes can be used in cities and notes that filters on many models may help with light pollution. The EarthSky article provides no quantified comparison between urban and dark-sky results, so it does not establish how much a filter improves an image or what results to expect from a particular location.

City use is therefore possible, but the outcome depends on the target, conditions, equipment, and the particular filter. Check whether a model includes or supports a relevant filter, and consult the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming every scope handles light pollution in the same way.

Can smart scopes photograph the Sun and Moon?

Curran says smart scopes can image the Sun and Moon. She also says her own scope came with a solar filter. That is not a blanket assurance that a filter is included with every scope or compatible across models.

How much do smart scopes cost?

EarthSky’s October 2026 article describes prices broadly as ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. This is a general description, not a dated model-by-model price survey; it does not establish current prices for any particular product. Curran points to camera resolution as one price distinction, but her own 2-megapixel camera is not identified by model.

There is no systematic model comparison in the article. When comparing current options, verify the following against manufacturer specifications and current listings:

  • Camera resolution: Check the stated resolution and consider whether the available image files suit your intended use.
  • Price: Confirm the current price and what is included rather than relying on a broad category range.
  • Portability: Check the scope’s dimensions, weight, tripod arrangement, and how you will carry it.
  • Filters: Confirm which filters are included or compatible, especially for any intended solar use.
  • App workflow: Review how target selection, alignment, tracking, and scheduled capture work.
  • Image handling: Verify whether images can be saved and exported in a format that suits your post-processing.
  • Mount and setup: Check what tripod or mounting equipment is included and what setup the manufacturer requires.

Are smart scopes right for you?

A smart scope is a natural fit if you want app-guided, automated astrophotography and are comfortable viewing images digitally. It may be less suitable if your priority is the direct eyepiece experience or if you want to choose and assemble separate telescope and camera components. The key distinction is not simply ease versus difficulty: it is an all-in-one digital imaging workflow versus a more traditional observing setup.

Community captions in the EarthSky article show a Seestar S50 Pro image of the Western Veil Nebula captured over five nights in Illinois in September 2026, and a Dwarf 3 image of the Pleiades from Egypt in September 2025. These are examples of community use, not comparative tests or evidence that one model is superior.
