A USB-C Power Delivery (PD) analyzer lets you observe the negotiation between a power source and a device. An inline model sits between them and can capture protocol messages; some models also measure electrical signals or actively exercise ports. Those capabilities are not interchangeable, so check the exact instrument and any required companion hardware before connecting it.
What a USB-C PD analyzer shows
A PD analyzer observes communication between a source, such as a charger, and a sink, such as a phone or laptop. An inline analyzer is placed in the connection between the two. Texas Instruments describes its TI-PD-ANALYZER as monitoring and logging PD data on the Configuration Channel pins (CC1 and CC2) to help analyze and debug source-to-sink communication. See the TI-PD-ANALYZER product page.
A decoded trace can show the order and content of protocol exchanges. Electrical measurements, when available, answer a different question: what voltage, current, or signal behavior occurred on the connection? For example, Total Phase explains voltage and current measurements for its own analyzer in its USB PD Analyzer measurement guide. Its circuit details should not be assumed to apply to other brands.
- Protocol trace: shows decoded messages exchanged during the session.
- Electrical readings: show measured values such as VBUS voltage or current, and potentially VCONN or CC signals, depending on the instrument.
A protocol message is not itself a direct electrical measurement, and a meter reading is not a decoded protocol event. Looking at both, when the analyzer supports both, can help distinguish a negotiation issue from an electrical behavior issue.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the instrument before connecting it
“Analyzer” and “tester” are broad product labels, not a promise of a standard feature set. Before setup, confirm the supported PD revision, connector arrangement, included software, companion hardware requirements, and whether the tool only captures traffic or can also generate power or exercise a port.
TI-PD-ANALYZER: a paired-EVM tool
The TI-PD-ANALYZER decodes PD messages according to the revision stated on its product page and works with a GUI that can display and save recorded communication. It is intended for use with a paired evaluation module (EVM), not as a standalone licensed product. Review the TI-PD-ANALYZER user guide and product documentation before purchase or setup.

TI’s guide describes a bidirectional unit with a Type-C plug and receptacle for the two sides of the link, with source and sink orientation specified by the device documentation. Follow that model’s connection instructions rather than assuming all inline analyzers use the same connector layout or orientation.
Other products may add tester or exerciser functions
PassMark’s USB Power Delivery Tester describes protocol sniffing alongside additional tester functions. Teledyne LeCroy’s Voyager M310e is an analyzer/exerciser whose manual warns that setting voltage or current beyond connected devices’ capabilities can damage the devices and cables. These examples illustrate why the model’s specifications and manual matter; they are not a complete survey of the market.

Set up and capture a session
- Confirm compatibility and requirements. Check the model’s supported PD revision, connector arrangement, software, and any required companion hardware. For TI-PD-ANALYZER, account for the paired-EVM requirement.
- Connect source and sink to opposite ends. Follow the instrument’s manual for which end faces the source and which faces the sink. For TI’s bidirectional unit, use its documented Type-C plug and receptacle orientation.
- Connect the analyzer to the host and open its supplied software. TI documents a GUI for displaying and saving recorded communication; consult the specific tool’s guide for its own host and software setup.
- Capture a repeatable charging session. Read the trace in message order and identify the communicating roles. Compare relevant events with electrical readings only if the instrument provides them.
- Save the trace and record the conditions. Note the source, sink, cable, analyzer model, software and firmware versions, connection orientation, and test conditions. This makes later comparisons more meaningful.
- Use exercising features cautiously. If the tool can source power or exercise a port, follow its manual and keep voltage and current settings within the ratings of every connected device and cable.
Choose a tool for the job
| Use case | What to look for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Debugging PD communication | Supported PD revision, decoded message capture, bidirectional connection, and suitable display/export software. | TI documents message monitoring and decoding for its TI-PD-ANALYZER, with paired-EVM use required. |
| Investigating electrical behavior | Explicit support for the measurements needed, such as VBUS voltage/current or CC signals. | Measurement features and circuit details vary by product; consult that model’s documentation. |
| Testing cables or exercising ports | Specific cable-check, programmable source/sink, or port-exercising functions. | These features are model-specific and can carry risk if configured beyond equipment ratings. |
| Formal compliance work | Applicable USB Type-C and PD test specifications and recognized testing equipment. | A captured trace alone does not establish compliance. USB-IF lists compliance testing resources. |
For any session you intend to share or compare, preserve the original trace and the conditions under which it was captured. A trace is evidence of that particular session; it does not by itself prove that a product meets a standard.
