Why is Phantom Blade Zero being compared to John Wick?
The comparison has a specific basis: S-Game names Donnie Yen’s work in John Wick: Chapter 4 among the pop-culture references informing the game’s martial-arts lineage. That connection helps explain the interest in sharp, cinematic action, but it does not make Phantom Blade Zero a Wick adaptation or establish that the two offer the same pacing, tone or quality.

There is also a meaningful difference in combat presentation. S-Game founder and CEO Soulframe Liang says the game’s combat relies on handcrafted animation: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.” That signals an emphasis on authored, stylized movement rather than a claim about how the finished game will feel to play.
What is Phantom Blade Zero about?
The story follows Soul, an elite assassin framed for killing the patriarch of the Order. A healer saves him with a makeshift cure, but it will last only 66 days. Soul must use that limited time to uncover the conspiracy behind the murder accusation.

The setup combines an assassin thriller with a supernatural world. The deadline gives Soul’s investigation urgency, while the conspiracy places him inside a larger conflict than a straightforward revenge story.
What does “Kungfupunk” mean?
S-Game calls the game’s overall art direction “Kungfupunk.” The term describes the Phantom World’s mix of Chinese kung fu, intricate machines with steampunk qualities, occult arts and other elements that do not fit neatly into those categories. It is the studio’s description of a hybrid setting, rather than a separate genre with fixed rules.

That blend is why “John Wick with demons and martial arts” works as a quick hook but not as a full description. The game’s identity comes from bringing stylized martial arts into an unusual fantasy world, not simply transplanting a contemporary action-film formula into a game.
Who is Donnie Yen in the game?
Game Informer reports that Donnie Yen contributes voice, face-model work and motion capture for Mó Yuan, and serves as a creative consultant. Those roles connect the project to a major martial-arts performer’s expertise. They do not show that the game has already earned critical acclaim or will match the quality of Yen’s films.

When does Phantom Blade Zero come out, and what platforms are confirmed?
S-Game’s official introduction announced Phantom Blade Zero as a PlayStation 5 title. A GamesRadar roundup lists October 29, 2026, as its release date. The date is secondary reporting; the official introduction establishes the PS5 platform but does not itself confirm that release date.
The game is developed in Unreal Engine 5, according to S-Game’s introduction. No other platform is established by the cited announcement, so availability beyond PS5 should not be assumed from these details.

Could Phantom Blade Zero be 2026’s best game?
It could become a standout, but “2026’s best game” is a forecast, not a result. The available facts support reasons for interest: a distinctive art-direction concept, a time-limited assassin story, handcrafted combat animation and Donnie Yen’s reported creative involvement. They do not establish review scores, award outcomes, or the game’s eventual quality.
S-Game said in 2023 that the wider Rainblood/Phantom Blade franchise had over 20 million fans. That is the developer’s claim about the franchise, not a sales figure or audience count for Phantom Blade Zero. The game is presented as the spiritual rebirth of Rainblood, the series that became the Phantom Blade franchise.
