Codex took over a project Claude Code had left unfinished and, in my account, surfaced issues the earlier agent had missed. That is a report of one handoff—not proof that Codex is generally more reliable or that it will find the same problems in another codebase. The practical question is what changed, how the fixes were checked, and what another developer should verify before trusting a handoff.

What this handoff does—and does not—show

The headline describes a specific project experience: Claude Code did not finish the work, and Codex later caught issues. The account is useful as a prompt to examine an AI coding handoff, but it is not independently verified by the public material available for this article. That material does not identify the repository, the unfinished task, the exact issues, the agents’ instructions or versions, or how proposed fixes were tested. Without those details, readers cannot reproduce the result or separate an agent’s contribution from changes in the project or the human’s guidance.

One successful handoff cannot establish a general ranking. Issue detection, whether a suggested fix is correct, repeatability, migration friction, and human verification are separate measures. An agent can flag more potential problems without producing correct fixes, and a clean test run does not establish that every relevant behavior was tested.

Why a handoff may need more than the same repository

Codex and Claude Code have tool-specific workflows. OpenAI’s Claude Code-to-Codex migration reference documents differences between them and notes that some migration cases need manual fixes. That means copying a repository—or asking a new agent to continue—may not carry over the original workflow intact. Instructions, tool behavior, and project conventions may need review, and the live reference may change over time.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep repository guidance focused and make the project’s actual requirements explicit. OpenAI’s vendor-authored harness-engineering account describes focused project instructions and tracking quality gaps. It offers workflow context, not independent evidence that one agent outperforms another.

A separate example is not proof about this project

In a separate bug-hunt comparison, Tom’s Guide reported that Codex added input validation that its writer said Claude Code had missed. That is one editorial test, not a controlled study—and it is not the project described in this headline. It illustrates a possible difference in issue detection, but it cannot verify what happened in this handoff or predict which agent will perform better on another repository. Read the Tom’s Guide comparison.

What larger project reports can tell you

OpenAI’s 2026 report on agent-assisted scientific computing describes eight projects: five using Codex alone and three using Codex with Claude Code. These are case studies, not a head-to-head accuracy benchmark; the counts do not show which tool catches more bugs. Read OpenAI’s scientific-computing report.

How to evaluate your own AI-agent handoff

Use the handoff as a review process, not a vote for one tool. Preserve enough context to understand what the first agent changed, then ask the next agent to investigate before it edits. For each claimed issue, require a concrete reproduction or a test that fails before the fix and passes after it.

  1. Record the starting point. Save the repository state, branch or commit, open issues, failing tests, and remaining task. This gives you a baseline for attributing changes.
  2. Carry over the working context. Provide the project’s relevant conventions, constraints, and instructions. Check for tool-specific workflow differences against the migration reference rather than assuming prior settings transfer unchanged.
  3. Ask for findings before edits. Have the second agent identify suspected issues, cite the affected files or behavior, and distinguish confirmed defects from hypotheses. This makes it easier to review whether it found something new or simply changed the implementation.
  4. Verify each proposed fix. Reproduce the failure where possible, inspect the diff, run the relevant tests, and check that existing behavior still works. A test result supports only the behavior covered by that test.
  5. Keep the comparison fair. Record the prompts, instructions, model or agent versions, and any human changes between attempts. If these differ, treat the outcome as a practical handoff result—not a controlled comparison.

What would make the account reproducible

A stronger project report would name the repository state and unfinished task; list each issue with evidence; show what instructions and agent versions were used; and explain how every fix was verified, ideally with before-and-after behavior or test output. Those details are not established by the public sources cited here. Until they are available, the defensible conclusion is limited: this headline describes one reported handoff, while broader claims about comparative reliability remain unsettled.
