Brain-IT can help reconstruct an image a person is looking at while their brain is being recorded in an fMRI scanner. It does not demonstrate unrestricted access to someone’s thoughts, and it is not a consumer device that can read minds without a scanner.
What Brain-IT demonstrated
Brain-IT, short for Brain-Interaction Transformer, is a research system that translates fMRI activity into image features used to guide image reconstruction. The task is specific: infer an image that a participant viewed while their brain activity was recorded, then generate a reconstruction of that image. The ICLR 2026 paper reports that its results surpassed earlier approaches visually and on standard objective metrics, though that does not mean every reconstructed image will be an exact copy.
The phrase “mind-reading” is therefore a headline shorthand. The reported experiment does not show that Brain-IT can retrieve arbitrary thoughts, memories, or intentions in the absence of a visual stimulus and fMRI recording.
How the image reconstruction works
1. Group brain voxels
The method groups functionally similar fMRI voxels—small units of measured brain volume—into clusters. A transformer integrates information across those clusters to represent patterns in the recorded brain activity.

2. Predict two kinds of image features
Brain-IT predicts complementary features. High-level semantic features help guide what the image depicts; low-level structural features provide a coarse layout. A diffusion model then uses these features to produce the reconstructed image. The combination is meant to guide both content and structure rather than simply produce a plausible image from a general description.
3. Use an image-to-brain encoder to expand training pairs
Limited paired image-and-fMRI data is a challenge for this kind of work. The Weizmann Institute account says the team used an image-to-fMRI encoder alongside the fMRI-to-image decoder. The encoder predicts a brain scan for an image that was not actually viewed in an MRI scanner; the decoder can then try to reconstruct the original image from that predicted scan. Professor Michal Irani, the study’s lead researcher, described the approach as a way for the models to “effectively build themselves a massive dataset” by translating from an unseen image to a predicted scan and back.

What the one-hour result means
The ICLR 2026 paper reports that Brain-IT achieved results comparable to existing methods trained on full 40-hour recordings when adapted to a new subject using one hour of fMRI data. This is the authors’ reported comparison in their study—not a guarantee that one hour will work equally well for every participant, scanner, or image set.
The study used the public Natural Scenes Dataset. The Weizmann Institute’s account describes it as containing eight participants and about 73,000 image-fMRI pairs. It says each participant viewed thousands of images over 30 to 40 scanning sessions; each session included six scans of about 10 minutes, with roughly 40 images viewed per scan. These figures describe this dataset and should not be read as a general sample size for brain-decoding research.

What the study does—and does not—establish
It requires fMRI recordings
Brain-IT depends on brain activity recorded in an fMRI scanner and research data used to train or adapt the model. The public WeizmannVision implementation is research software, not a phone app or a device that works from across a room. Its GitHub repository provides implementation and data and compute information for researchers.
It is not proven to decode arbitrary thoughts
The demonstrated target is a viewed image paired with fMRI activity. The study does not establish that the model can decode a person’s private thoughts without such visual input, identify what they are thinking about in general, or operate without a scanner.

It has not been shown to decode dreams or video
The Weizmann Institute describes auditory decoding and video as possible future research directions. Video is particularly challenging because scenes change much faster than fMRI scans capture them. Those directions should not be mistaken for capabilities already demonstrated by Brain-IT.
It is not a validated medical or communication product
The primary materials describe a research method; they do not establish clinical deployment or validated assistive communication use. The reported results are not evidence that Brain-IT is ready to diagnose, treat, or communicate on behalf of patients.

Why the findings matter
Reconstructing a viewed image from brain recordings is a demanding research problem: the system must infer meaningful visual content from noisy measurements and generate an image that reflects the original. Brain-IT’s combination of shared functional voxel clusters, semantic and structural features, and an image-to-fMRI encoder offers one approach to that problem. The authors’ one-hour adaptation result is notable because it compares favorably with methods trained on much longer recordings, but it remains a result from a particular study and dataset—not a general-purpose mind-reading capability.
