Five PS2 games make especially strong cases for full modern remakes: Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, and Resident Evil Outbreak. Each has an idea worth revisiting, but a remake should do more than sharpen the graphics: it should preserve what made the original distinctive while adapting its play and presentation for current audiences.
This is a wishlist, not a list of announced projects. The selections reflect editorial preference, not an objective ranking. A remake means a ground-up rebuild; a remaster is a technical update or reissue. PlayStation uses that distinction when describing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater as a remake and contrasting it with a remastered collection. PlayStation’s overview of modern remakes explains the difference in practice.
Five PS2 games that could benefit from a full remake
The PS2’s library was enormous: PlayStation Blog Deutschland cited about 160 million consoles sold and a library of about 4,000 games in a 2020 article. Those are historical figures from that article, not updated totals, but they help explain why a shortlist like this is necessarily selective. PlayStation Blog Deutschland’s 2020 retrospective offers that context.
1. Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X is a natural remake candidate because its journey through Spira gives a new production room to revisit both spectacle and character. The story follows Tidus as he travels with Yuna and her guardians, and its emotional focus remains the main reason to return to it—not simply the prospect of updated visuals.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A ground-up version could refresh the presentation and make the world feel more immediate while protecting the original’s story and character designs. It could also give Square Enix a chance to consider how Final Fantasy X-2, the 2003 sequel, fits into a modern remake line. That is a creative possibility, not an announced Square Enix plan. The original wishlist makes the case for revisiting both games. Sam Stone’s SVG list
2. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid 2 deserves a remake that puts Raiden’s perspective and the game’s political thriller at the center. Its story involves a threat targeting the President, and a modern rebuild could present that premise with contemporary pacing and staging while preserving the disorienting turns that define the original.

There is an important distinction between a remake and the version currently included in Konami’s Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. Konami says the collection includes Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in their HD Collection versions. Its separately announced faithful remake is Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3—not Metal Gear Solid 2. Konami’s announcement
3. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy combines third-person action-platforming with a nonlinear world, side quests, and minigames. Its appeal lies in moving through a connected adventure and finding reasons to explore beyond the main route.

A remake could rebuild the world and controls for modern hardware without flattening that sense of discovery into a more conventional level-by-level structure. The PS3 Jak and Daxter Collection already included a remastered version, but a technical update is not the same as a ground-up reimagining. The wishlist argues for a remake that can go further than improved presentation. SVG’s selection
4. Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is an underappreciated 3D entry with a useful place in the series’ history: it tells a prequel story about the origins of the feud between Dracula and the Belmont family. That makes it an appealing starting point for a modern take on this part of the franchise.

A remake could reintroduce the game’s story to players who missed it while reworking its 3D action for current expectations. Calling it the next game that should be remade is a recommendation, not evidence of a Konami project. The original wishlist’s case for the game
5. Resident Evil Outbreak
Resident Evil Outbreak brought cooperative survival to Raccoon City, giving players a different angle on the series’ familiar disaster. Its original online functionality used a PS2 online modem, according to the wishlist. That historical detail does not establish whether the original online service is available today.

A modern remake could make cooperative play easier to access by updating the online infrastructure and could revisit the third-person gameplay. The appeal is not just another trip through Raccoon City: it is the chance to make a group survival scenario work for contemporary players. No Capcom remake announcement is established by the sources cited here. SVG’s Outbreak proposal

A remaster can refresh presentation and reissue a game while leaving much of its underlying design intact. A remake starts from the ground up, creating more room to revise how a game plays and how it reaches a modern audience while retaining its identity. That distinction matters here: Jak and Daxter has had a remastered version, and Metal Gear Solid 2 is included in an HD collection, but neither fact means either title has received the remake proposed above.
Konami’s official example is Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which it describes as a faithful remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The same announcement identifies the HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in Master Collection Vol. 1. Konami’s product announcement
Are any of these five remakes confirmed?
The official sources cited here do not establish remake announcements for Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, or Resident Evil Outbreak. The confirmed comparison in this set is Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which concerns Metal Gear Solid 3. Treat all five picks as suggestions, not development news.
