A secure authenticator can make it harder to pass off a copied embedded device as an authorized product by keeping cryptographic keys protected and requiring a valid cryptographic response. It is a component in a broader security design—not a guarantee that a product cannot be cloned. The result depends on how the chip is provisioned, integrated, and checked by the rest of the system.
What a secure authenticator does to resist cloning
A secure authenticator is a hardware component that performs cryptographic operations using protected keys or data. A product can be designed to ask a device or component to prove that it possesses an authorized secret, then accept or reject it based on the response. Keeping credentials in a security component rather than ordinary host memory can make them less straightforward to copy.
This changes the goal from preventing anyone from reproducing a device’s visible hardware to preventing an unauthorized copy from successfully proving its identity. A copied board may look like the original yet fail authentication if it cannot produce the expected cryptographic response. That outcome is only possible when the host and any relevant service verify the response correctly and keys are provisioned and managed securely.
Why design cloning matters
In a May 25, 2022 webinar listing, Analog Devices frames the risk as successful designs being over-produced by contract manufacturers or copied by competitors and opportunists. It identifies possible revenue and reputation consequences from counterfeit products, as well as remote attacks against network-connected devices. The listing highlights industrial automation and medical appliances as sensitive contexts, but gives no incidence or loss figures; those examples are a risk rationale, not a quantified estimate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Authentication can support protection against unauthorized production and counterfeit components, while cryptographic controls can contribute to a product’s broader cybersecurity design. It does not by itself prevent someone from copying circuitry, software, or enclosure details, and the cited material does not establish that any one chip stops every attack.
ADI secure-authenticator examples
ADI documents both a broader cryptographic controller family and a production secure authenticator. The available product information supports comparing their documented roles and lifecycle notes, not ranking their effectiveness against cloning.

| Part or item | What ADI documents | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| MAXQ1061/MAXQ1062 | DeepCover cryptographic controllers for embedded devices. The MAXQ1061 page lists secure key and certificate storage; AES, ECC, ECDSA, SHA, and MAC functions; a true random-number generator; secure boot; tamper detection; lifecycle management; TLS/DTLS functions; and SPI and I²C host interfaces. It lists 32KB user-programmable EEPROM for MAXQ1061 and 8KB for MAXQ1062. | The MAXQ1061 product page says “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGNS.” Do not assume that lifecycle label applies to MAXQ1062; check its current product information and datasheet. |
| DS28E36 | ADI identifies this as a production DeepCover secure authenticator with ECC-P256 and SHA-256 security functions. | It is an embedded product component, not a consumer security key. Verify its current datasheet for interface, capacity, and integration requirements; the cited product summary does not establish those details for comparison. |
| MAXQ1061EVKIT | ADI lists an evaluation kit for MAXQ1061. The MAXQ1062 page says the older MAXQ1061-KIT evaluation board is obsolete and identifies MAXQ1061EVKIT as its replacement. | An evaluation kit supports engineering assessment and prototyping; the product listing does not establish current stock or third-party availability. |
ADI’s MAX32520 product page also lists MAXQ1061 and MAXQ1062 as secure-authenticator ecosystem parts. Check the individual product pages for current lifecycle information rather than extending one part’s status to the whole family.
How to assess a design before choosing a part
- Define what must be authenticated. Decide whether the product needs to authenticate a component, a finished device, or both, and identify what action follows a failed check.
- Set the threat model. Consider the relevant risks—such as unauthorized production, counterfeit replacements, or remote attacks on a connected product—and the consequences of accepting an unauthenticated device. The appropriate control depends on the product and deployment.
- Plan key provisioning and management. Determine how each device receives its credentials, who controls that process, and how keys are protected through manufacturing and the product lifecycle. A cryptographic component cannot compensate for poorly controlled provisioning.
- Specify what the host verifies. Define how the host or service requests and validates the cryptographic response, and what it does when authentication fails. Merely including a security chip does not ensure that the surrounding product enforces authentication.
- Check integration requirements. Match the part’s documented functions, storage, and host interface to the design. For the MAXQ1061/MAXQ1062, ADI lists SPI and I²C; check the DS28E36 datasheet for its specific requirements rather than inferring them from another part.
- Confirm lifecycle and engineering status. Verify the current status of the exact component before committing to a new design. Treat an evaluation kit as development hardware, not as evidence of production availability.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
ADI’s webinar listing, titled “Avoid Design Cloning: Protect Your Devices with ADI’s Secure Authenticators,” states learning objectives around secure-authenticator technology, cryptography, cloning prevention, intellectual-property protection, and cybersecurity requirements in industrial and medical applications. It names presenters Stéphane di Vito and Scott Jones, but the listing does not provide a transcript, so it does not support attributing spoken quotations to them.
