Energy Dome’s CO₂ Battery stores electricity using a closed thermomechanical cycle: it compresses and liquefies carbon dioxide, stores the heat created during charging, then releases that heat and expands the CO₂ through a turbine or expander to generate electricity. It is an industrial, grid-scale storage system—not carbon capture. Energy Dome says its products are designed for 8–24 hours of dispatchable capacity, but its efficiency, cost and lifetime figures are company or project claims, not a single independently verified performance profile.
How does the CO₂ Battery work?
The CO₂ Battery converts electrical energy into stored pressure and heat, then runs the process in reverse to return electricity. Carbon dioxide circulates as the working fluid in a closed loop; it is not consumed or intended to be permanently stored. Energy Dome describes the system and its operating cycle on its technology page and in its 2026 brochure.
- Charge: Electricity drives compressors that raise the CO₂’s pressure and temperature. The compression heat is captured for later use.
- Store: The CO₂ is cooled and stored in liquid form, while the captured heat is held separately. The system is designed to retain both parts of the energy-storage cycle.
- Discharge: The stored heat is returned to the CO₂, which evaporates and expands through an expander or turbine. A generator converts that motion into electricity for the grid.
- Recirculate: The CO₂ returns to the dome or gasholder, ready for another cycle.
The name “CO₂ Battery” describes the storage medium and process, not an electrochemical battery like lithium-ion. The company says the fluid remains in a closed circuit; the system’s purpose is to shift electricity from one time to another.
Is it carbon capture?
No. Energy Dome’s CO₂ Battery uses carbon dioxide as a recirculated working fluid. That is different from capturing emissions from a power plant or the air and storing the carbon to keep it out of the atmosphere. The project descriptions cited here do not establish a carbon-removal function.

What are the two Energy Dome configurations?

How long can it store energy, and what is its round-trip efficiency?
Energy Dome’s current product page describes firm, dispatchable capacity over 8–24 hours. The company’s 2026 brochure states 70%+ net AC–AC and MV–MV round-trip efficiency. Those figures are not interchangeable: the brochure specifies two measurement boundaries, while other published figures use different contexts.
The European Commission’s CORDIS factsheet for the CO₂ Battery project records 75% round-trip efficiency and a project-record signature date of 2023. That project metric does not independently validate every company performance claim or make the different figures a single directly comparable result.

Energy Dome’s product page and 2026 brochure also claim a 30+ year lifetime and no degradation. These are company claims. The brochure says performance is third-party verified, but the cited brochure material does not identify the verifier or provide a test report, so the verification scope cannot be assessed from that source alone.

The European Commission CORDIS project factsheet reports €183/kWh first-of-a-kind CAPEX. It also gives a projected figure of €103/kWh in a scale scenario based on production of 50 plants per year. These are project-record figures with a 2023 signature date; the €103/kWh value is a production-scale projection, not a demonstrated price for a current installed plant. The factsheet does not make these figures a like-for-like comparison with another storage technology’s installed cost.
Use the cost and performance numbers as attributed estimates, not as guaranteed economics for a particular project. Actual project economics depend on the configuration, site, operating profile and commercial terms; the cited figures do not provide a complete, independently verified cost model for an individual installation.

How does it compare with lithium-ion and other storage?
The useful comparison is not simply “which battery is better?” Storage options differ in duration, efficiency, installed-cost basis, degradation, location requirements, materials and supply-chain exposure, dispatch profile and commercial maturity. A system designed for many hours of discharge may solve a different grid problem from a lithium-ion installation optimized for shorter-duration cycling.
Energy Dome’s own comparison with lithium-ion is a company comparison, not an independent apples-to-apples assessment. The cited sources do not provide a consistent independent dataset covering the CO₂ Battery, lithium-ion, pumped hydro and other long-duration technologies across those dimensions. In particular, they do not establish comparative current installed costs, operating lifetimes or measured field performance across all options. A universal winner cannot be inferred from the published figures above.
For a project decision, the relevant questions are how many hours of delivery are required, how often the system will cycle, what efficiency is achieved at the applicable measurement boundary, what the full installed-cost basis includes, and whether the site and grid connection suit the technology. Those details should be evaluated against project-specific evidence rather than a vendor’s headline comparison.

Google announced a long-term partnership with Energy Dome in July 2025, including company investment and plans to support multiple commercial projects globally. That announcement signals a commercial relationship and project pipeline, not proof that the planned facilities are already operating. Google’s announcement.

Who is the CO₂ Battery for?
Energy Dome is selling industrial infrastructure for utilities, power markets and large energy users—not a household battery or a consumer CO₂ product. Its announced projects are measured in tens of megawatts and hundreds of megawatt-hours, and the company’s product positioning focuses on dispatchable storage over many hours. Whether it fits a particular grid or large-load application depends on the required discharge duration, site conditions, dispatch arrangements and project economics.
