On a Pixel, I use four built-in display controls to make nighttime screen use more comfortable: Night Light warms the colors, Dark theme changes supported interfaces, Extra dim lowers brightness below the usual minimum, and Bedtime mode can automate several changes on a schedule. They address different problems, so try the one that matches what feels uncomfortable. Google describes Night Light as reducing blue color and says blue light can make it harder to fall asleep; neither that rationale nor these settings guarantees less eye strain or better sleep for everyone.
Which Android display tweak should you try first?
Start with the change that matches what bothers you. A bright white interface calls for Dark theme; a screen that still seems too bright at its lowest setting calls for Extra dim. Night Light changes the screen’s color, while Bedtime mode is useful when you want some display changes to happen automatically.
| Tweak | What it changes | Can it run automatically? | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night Light | Reduces blue color, making the display warmer | Yes; custom or sunset-to-sunrise schedule | Sunset scheduling depends on location services; menus vary by device |
| Dark theme | System interface and compatible apps | Availability and scheduling depend on device and Android version | Some apps stay light; expanded darkening can affect images or legibility |
| Extra dim | Brightness below the regular minimum | Not stated in Google’s Extra dim instructions | Settings location varies by manufacturer |
| Bedtime mode | Can apply grayscale, dim wallpaper, disable always-on display, and turn on Dark theme | Yes; schedule it in Bedtime mode or through a Clock bedtime schedule | Options and paths vary across Android releases and manufacturers |
Google’s help pages describe these controls and their intended uses, not a clinical comparison of eye comfort or sleep outcomes. There is no evidence here to rank them by effectiveness.
1. Turn on Night Light to warm the screen
Night Light changes screen color, reducing blue color so the display looks warmer. Google says blue light can make it harder to fall asleep; treat that as the feature’s rationale, not a promise that Night Light will improve your sleep.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
On a Pixel, open Settings → Display & touch → Night Light. Choose a custom schedule or sunset-to-sunrise. The sunset-to-sunrise option depends on location services. If you have a non-Pixel phone, search Settings for “Night Light” or “blue light filter”; manufacturers may use different labels and paths.
Google’s Pixel Night Light instructions explain the available scheduling options.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
2. Use Dark theme for supported interfaces
Dark theme changes the Android system interface and apps that support it. It does not recolor media such as videos, and some apps may remain light. Google says Dark theme can make the screen easier to read and can save battery on some screens; neither benefit applies universally.
To find it, open Settings and search for “Dark theme” or “Dark mode.” The path and options vary by Android version and manufacturer. On Android 16 and newer, an expanded option can darken more interfaces. That may make some images look wrong or text harder to read; turn the option off or exclude affected apps if that happens.

3. Try Extra dim when the minimum brightness is still too bright
Extra dim lowers the display below its normal minimum brightness. It is the relevant setting to try when the standard brightness slider is already at the bottom but the screen still feels too bright in a dark room. Google lists Extra dim among Android accessibility controls for low vision or light sensitivity; that does not establish a measured eye-strain benefit.

Bedtime mode can bring several display adjustments together on a schedule. Google’s documented options include grayscale, dimming wallpaper, keeping the screen dark by disabling always-on display, and Dark theme. This is the most useful of the four when your goal is to have selected changes happen as bedtime begins rather than switching them on one by one.

On Pixel instructions, Android 13 and later support scheduling Dark theme through Bedtime mode. The exact options and labels depend on your device and Android release. You can also set a bedtime schedule in the Clock app, which can engage Bedtime mode.
Look in Settings for “Bedtime mode” or “Digital Wellbeing,” or use the Clock app’s bedtime schedule. Google’s instructions cover Bedtime mode’s screen options and setting a bedtime schedule.
How to combine the four without making the screen harder to use
These controls change different things, so you can choose a small combination rather than enabling everything. For example, use Night Light for warmer colors, then set Extra dim if the screen remains too bright. Add Dark theme if bright app interfaces are the problem. Use Bedtime mode when you want compatible changes to switch on automatically.
Quick Recap
- Check text and images after enabling Dark theme, especially its expanded option.
- If an app stays light, it may not support Android’s Dark theme.
- If you use sunset-to-sunrise Night Light scheduling, location services are required.
- If the labels in these instructions do not match your phone, search the Settings app for the feature name; Android menus vary by device and version.
