The creator reports that it captures 12-megapixel images every minute in daylight, uses Power over Ethernet (PoE), stores images on an SD card, and transfers them to a Mac archive. It is a customizable documentation project—not a security camera—and the reported setup is not a complete, verified build guide.
What the backyard camera does
The creator described building the camera to document a garden renovation and seasonal changes. The software is designed to use latitude and longitude to follow seasonal timing. According to the creator’s October 4, 2026 post, it can be controlled from a phone, make a video from a selected date range, and delete older images when the SD card reaches 85% full. These are creator-reported capabilities; they have not been independently verified.
The reported workflow is to capture images during daylight, keep them on the camera’s SD card, and transfer them to a Mac archive. The creator reports a one-minute capture interval and 12-megapixel stills. That describes this project’s configuration, not a guaranteed performance level for every Raspberry Pi setup.
Which camera module does it use?
The build uses the Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 Wide, according to the creator. Raspberry Pi specifies the Camera Module 3 family’s Sony IMX708 sensor at 12 megapixels. The Wide version offers a 120-degree field of view, compared with 75 degrees diagonally for the standard version. A wider view can help fit more of a garden into a fixed frame, though the right choice depends on the scene and camera placement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Variant | Field of view | Infrared filter |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Module 3 standard | 75 degrees diagonal (Raspberry Pi specification) | Available with or without an infrared filter |
| Camera Module 3 Wide | 120 degrees (Raspberry Pi specification) | Available with or without an infrared filter |
Raspberry Pi lists Camera Module 3 as available from $25 on its product page, accessed in 2026; local prices and availability can vary by variant and market. The company says the module is expected to remain in production until at least January 2030. See the Camera Module 3 product page for current options and pricing.
Standard versus NoIR
NoIR versions omit the infrared filter. Raspberry Pi explains that they can capture infrared when paired with infrared illumination. The featured daylight garden build is reported to use the standard Wide camera; NoIR is a distinct option for a deliberate infrared-imaging use, not an automatic upgrade for this configuration. Check the Raspberry Pi camera documentation and the project’s current software instructions if considering a different module.

What you would need to build a similar setup
The reported core components are a Raspberry Pi 4, Camera Module 3 Wide, PoE power, and an SD card. Secondary coverage also describes a junction box and 3D-printed wall mount and camera bracket. That is a component outline, not a complete bill of materials: the available descriptions do not identify exact board memory, PoE hardware, cable, card capacity or speed, or enclosure model.
- Compute and camera: Raspberry Pi 4 and a compatible Camera Module 3 variant. The creator names the Wide version for this project.
- Power and network: PoE is reported for the build, but the exact PoE HAT, splitter, power budget, and cable are not specified. Confirm compatibility among the Pi, power source, and chosen PoE equipment.
- Storage: An SD card is reported; capacity and speed are not stated. Estimate storage needs from the capture schedule and image sizes, and decide how often images will be copied to an archive.
- Mounting and enclosure: The secondary account mentions a junction box plus printed mount and bracket, but gives no weather-protection rating or sealing method. Select an enclosure and installation hardware rated for the actual outdoor conditions.
- Archive and control: The creator reports transfer to a Mac and mobile control. The available descriptions do not establish the exact transfer method or a complete configuration procedure.
How to approach the software and setup
The project is open source, but available reporting describes terminal-based setup and does not establish a full step-by-step build guide. Before buying parts or assembling the camera, review the current repository’s README and build files for supported hardware, software prerequisites, wiring, and setup commands. The repository is linked from the creator’s project post; instructions may change over time.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Plan the capture schedule and image-retention approach before installation. The creator reports daylight-only capture and deletion at 85% SD-card capacity, but does not provide a verified storage estimate or long-term reliability data. Keep an independent copy of images you want to preserve rather than relying only on automatic cleanup.
Outdoor use and what this project is not
PoE can carry power and network connectivity over one cable in the reported configuration, but that does not make a camera weatherproof. The available descriptions do not establish the enclosure’s ingress rating, cable entry sealing, or suitability for a particular climate. Choose outdoor-rated components and protect connections according to the installation environment.

This is a time-lapse and observation camera, not a security system. Secondary coverage says it is not designed to detect intruders or deliveries or send those alerts. Garden growth or animal observation are plausible uses for a camera that records images, but they are not established as tested features of this project. If you need reliable alerts, use equipment designed for that purpose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who might find the project useful?
The build is most relevant to someone comfortable adapting open-source hardware and command-line software who wants to document a fixed outdoor scene and manage their own image archive. A ready-made camera may be a better fit if straightforward installation, certified weather protection, or security alerts matter more than customization and local control.
