AI is changing cybersecurity work, but the evidence points to evolving teams and skills—not a blanket replacement of security professionals. The roles drawing attention include AI security engineering, governance and risk, adversarial testing, incident response, threat intelligence and AI-enabled security operations. Some employers may hire dedicated specialists; others will add AI responsibilities to existing jobs.
What the evidence says about AI and cybersecurity hiring
A global SANS Institute and GIAC Certifications survey of 947 respondents, primarily cybersecurity and information-security leaders, found that 74% said AI had affected team size or role structure. Respondents mainly described efficiency gains; 16% cited workforce reduction. These are self-reported survey results, not a causal estimate of industry-wide job losses. SANS | GIAC 2026 Cybersecurity Workforce Research Report
The same survey found that 53% said they needed more job specialists for new roles, up from 23% in 2025. Its summary says skills gaps were cited more often than an inability to hire enough people. That points to a demand for people who can combine security expertise with AI-specific knowledge, rather than simply a surge in headcount across every security function.
UK figures show AI skills are appearing more often in job advertisements, but remain a minority requirement. The UK Government’s 2026 report, based on 2025 postings, found that 9% of UK cyber job postings requested AI skills, up from 4% in 2024. Automation skills appeared in 15%, up from 11%. These figures describe UK postings and should not be treated as global hiring rates. UK Government: Cyber security skills in the UK labour market 2026

Adoption is broader than hiring for dedicated AI-security jobs. The same UK report says 70% of cyber businesses reported staff using AI day to day, compared with 53% in the previous study. Use at work does not mean an organization has created a new role for it.
Which cybersecurity roles are emerging around AI?
These role names appear in SANS-linked coverage, but they are examples of emerging labels, not standardized job titles used by every employer. In practice, responsibilities may sit in an existing security, engineering, risk or operations team.
AI security engineer
Works on the security of AI systems and the services around them. The remit may include assessing how a model or AI-enabled application is exposed, reviewing its supporting infrastructure and data flows, and helping engineering teams address security risks across the system’s lifecycle.
AI governance, risk and compliance lead
Connects AI use to organizational risk decisions, policies and controls. The work can involve identifying where AI is used, clarifying accountability, assessing risk and coordinating governance with security, legal, privacy and business teams. It calls for communication and judgment alongside technical understanding.
AI red-team specialist
Tests AI systems from an attacker’s perspective to uncover weaknesses before they are abused. This is a specialized form of adversarial testing, distinct from assuming that every conventional penetration tester already has the skills to assess AI systems.

AI supply-chain security engineer
Focuses on risks in the components and services used to build or operate AI systems. This work extends supply-chain security into AI-related dependencies and the systems that rely on them.
AI incident-response orchestrator
Helps prepare for and coordinate responses to AI-related security incidents. That can mean connecting security operations, incident responders and relevant business owners so decisions and responsibilities are clear when an incident occurs.
AI threat-intelligence analyst
Applies threat-intelligence work to risks involving AI, helping security teams interpret relevant threats and make that intelligence useful to defensive operations.
AI SOC orchestrator
Works at the intersection of AI-enabled tools and security operations center (SOC) workflows. The focus is on how AI supports detection and response processes, and how those processes are coordinated—not simply on adding a chatbot to the SOC.
AI identity and deepfake defense specialist
Addresses identity and impersonation risks associated with deepfakes and other AI-enabled deception. The work may intersect with identity security, fraud response and organizational procedures for verifying people or requests.

SANS-linked coverage also names post-quantum cryptography migration specialists. This is an adjacent technology-driven security role, not an AI role; it concerns preparing cryptographic systems for post-quantum requirements.
The examples above are reported by IT Pro’s coverage of SANS-linked research. The labels are useful for understanding areas of work, but they do not establish a standard title or a distinct vacancy at every organization.
AI work is also being added to existing security jobs
A dedicated title is only one way teams adapt. NIST’s workforce framing is more flexible: AI-related tasks, knowledge and skills may be added to existing work roles as well as new ones. In a June 2025 account, NIST said NICE would engage the community on adding AI-related Task, Knowledge and Skill statements to relevant existing and new roles. The article described an AI Security Competency Area available for public comment and future community review of work-role updates; it does not establish that every job family has already adopted a final AI-specific standard. NIST: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Cybersecurity Workforce
That approach fits the varied work involved. A security operations analyst might use AI-supported tools in routine workflows; a cloud security engineer might take on AI-related risks within cloud services; and a risk or compliance professional might be asked to assess how the organization uses AI. Those duties do not automatically require a new job title.
AI use also does not remove the need for incident preparation. ISACA’s 2026 report found that 48% of respondents either did not know whether their organization had AI incident playbooks or said it did not. ISACA also identified gaps in LLM SecOps, soft skills, cloud computing, data security and ML SecOps. The combination suggests that organizations need both technical competencies and the ability to plan, explain risk and coordinate a response. ISACA: 2026 State of Cybersecurity report

Skills that matter across AI-focused security work
- Security fundamentals: AI-related responsibilities sit within cybersecurity, so the ability to recognize and manage security risks remains foundational.
- AI and machine-learning security: Understanding AI systems, their use and associated risks supports roles such as AI security engineering, adversarial testing and ML SecOps.
- Cloud and data security: ISACA lists cloud computing and data security among the skills gaps reported in its 2026 account of the cybersecurity landscape.
- Governance and risk judgment: AI use raises questions about ownership, controls and response readiness that require more than tool operation.
- Communication and coordination: ISACA identifies soft skills among gaps, while governance and incident-response work depend on making decisions understandable across teams.
Accenture’s 2026 analysis says 59% of open cybersecurity roles require hybrid technical and strategic skills, compared with 40% of the cyber workforce fitting that profile. This is Accenture’s assessment, not a government census or a universal vacancy measure; it nevertheless underscores the value it sees in combining hands-on capability with strategic judgment. Accenture: Reinventing the Cyber Workforce
How strong is demand—and what does “hot” mean?
Demand is changing, but the available indicators do not show an unqualified hiring boom. The UK Government estimated a broader cyber workforce of about 145,900 people, with 2% year-on-year growth. It recorded 34,932 core cyber job postings and 32,032 cyber-enabled postings in 2025. These are UK estimates and advertisement counts, not a forecast that every posting represents a unique hire.
Core cyber postings rose 7% from 2024 to 2025, but the report cautions that this may indicate stabilization rather than a return to early-2020s highs. The share of UK cyber firms expecting workforce growth in 2026 was 53%, down from 67% in the previous study. The picture is therefore one of continuing activity and shifting skill requirements, not proof that every AI-related specialty is rapidly expanding.
ISACA also reports that respondents use AI for tasks including automating threat detection and response, routine security tasks and endpoint security. Adoption can change how work is done without creating a separate job, and it does not by itself show that workload or staffing needs will fall.
How to assess an AI-security job listing
Job titles alone can be unreliable because emerging labels are not standardized. Compare the substance of a role using these questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- What is the work focus? Is the role about securing AI systems and supply chains, governance and risk, adversarial testing, incident response and threat intelligence, or AI-enabled security operations?
- Is it a dedicated specialist job? Check whether AI security is the central responsibility or one competency added to a broader security role.
- What kind of responsibility does it carry? Distinguish hands-on engineering and operations from governance, communication, risk decisions and coordination.
- How strong is the evidence behind the title? A label in selected advertisements is not the same as a framework-defined occupation or a representative survey of vacancies.
- What does the posting actually require? Look for named responsibilities and skills rather than assuming a role title guarantees meaningful AI-security work.
Salary figures deserve the same care. IT Pro reports selected figures from SANS-linked coverage, including an average of around $185,000 for AI security engineers and high-end AI-security salaries above $260,000. The accessible coverage does not establish the methodology behind those figures, so they should not be treated as typical salary guidance or directly compared with a local offer without matching geography, seniority and role scope.
