AI is changing cybersecurity work by speeding up analysis and automating parts of detection, triage, response and reporting. It is also shifting effort toward checking AI output, managing access and risk, and deciding when a person must approve an action. Current survey findings show adoption and changing perceptions of work—not proof that AI will replace cybersecurity teams or eliminate roles across the industry.

How cybersecurity teams are using AI

Organizations are applying AI to operational tasks that involve finding patterns in large volumes of data and helping teams respond. The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 reports that 77% of surveyed organizations had adopted AI for cybersecurity. The applications respondents reported most often were phishing detection, intrusion and anomaly response, and user-behaviour analytics.

Reported application Share of surveyed organizations
Phishing detection 52%
Intrusion and anomaly response 46%
User-behaviour analytics 40%

These are organization-level survey findings, not universal adoption rates or measures of how well a system performs. In practice, AI may help surface suspicious activity, summarize alerts, analyze logs, support incident response or draft compliance reports. That can shorten parts of an investigation, but teams still need to determine whether a finding is accurate, relevant and safe to act on.

In the 2026 outlook, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna described agentic AI as one of the tools defenders may use to keep pace with attackers: “Criminals are always willing to use all possible ways to get access to value, much of which is contained in the cyber infrastructure. Consequently, to stay ahead, those of us who defend must use every tool at our disposal – which now includes agentic AI.” The point is not that AI guarantees defenders an advantage; it is that defenders are adopting it in an environment where adversaries can use new capabilities too.

What AI changes in cybersecurity jobs

Automation can reduce time spent on repetitive analysis, but it does not remove the need to interpret evidence, set priorities or own consequential decisions. In a 2026 ISC2 survey of 856 cybersecurity professionals who already used AI in their roles, respondents described more time spent both evaluating AI recommendations and checking AI-generated output over the previous year.

Change reported by AI-using cybersecurity professionals Share of respondents
Spent more time deciding whether to trust or act on AI recommendations 65%
Spent more time reviewing or validating AI output 63%

The results suggest that AI can redistribute work rather than simply remove it: less manual processing in some steps may be accompanied by more validation, escalation and oversight. They reflect respondents’ experiences, not a controlled measure of time saved or a forecast for every security team.

Will AI replace cybersecurity analysts?

The available findings do not establish that analysts as a profession will be replaced. ISC2 asked practitioners already using AI how the need for entry-level positions had changed over the prior year; 56% perceived that it had decreased somewhat or significantly. That is a perception about role demand, not a count of jobs lost. In the same survey, 19% reported little or no impact, 12% reported increased need, and 13% were unsure. The range of responses points to uncertainty about how organizations will redesign junior work, not a settled employment outcome.

Some entry-level tasks may be easier to automate or accelerate, while teams still need people who can verify findings, learn incident-handling practice and build judgment. If routine work changes, organizations may need to be deliberate about how early-career staff gain those skills rather than assuming that automation will provide a replacement path.

Skills cybersecurity professionals need as AI use grows

Security teams need skills in both using AI for cybersecurity work and securing AI systems themselves. NIST’s NICE program describes an AI Security Competency Area and possible AI-related task, knowledge and skill statements for relevant work roles. NIST presented this competency work for public comment in June 2025; it is framework development, not a finalized universal job requirement.

  • Validation and analytical judgment: Check AI findings against logs, telemetry, policy and other evidence; recognize when a confident-sounding answer is unsupported.
  • AI and data security: Understand what data a system can access, how it is handled, and how weaknesses in an AI application can affect confidentiality, integrity or availability.
  • Access and workflow design: Match permissions to the task, and distinguish between an AI system that recommends an action and one that can execute it.
  • Governance and communication: Explain uncertainty, document decisions and route high-impact or ambiguous cases to the right person.
  • Adaptability: Keep learning as tools and workflows change; technical familiarity alone is not a substitute for security fundamentals.

NIST’s workforce framing distinguishes securing AI systems from using AI to improve cybersecurity tasks such as data analysis and anomaly detection. The two areas overlap, but they are not interchangeable: a team may use AI in its operations without having adequately assessed the security of the AI system itself.

New risks from AI agents

AI agents can do more than generate text: depending on their design, they may use tools, access data or take actions in connected systems. That makes their permissions and potential side effects important security questions. NIST’s May 2026 summary of responses to its request for information reports broad agreement among commenters that AI agents introduce novel security threats and that established cybersecurity principles need adaptation for agent security.

  • Credentials and permissions: An agent with access to accounts, code, cloud services or security consoles may be able to cause harm if its credentials are exposed or its access is broader than the task requires.
  • Prompt injection and manipulation: Instructions embedded in content an agent reads may attempt to redirect it or induce it to reveal information or take an unauthorized action.
  • Errors that propagate: A mistaken decision can have wider consequences when an agent can repeat an action, trigger other tools or affect multiple systems.
  • Unclear accountability: Teams need to know who is responsible for approving an action, reviewing its result and responding when an automated workflow goes wrong.

These are security concerns, not proof that every agent is unsafe or that a particular control will eliminate risk. The threat depends on the agent’s capabilities, the data it can see, the systems it can affect and the limits placed on its actions.

How organizations can adopt AI without losing oversight

The World Economic Forum’s 2026 cybersecurity outlook identifies practical barriers to adoption: respondents cited insufficient knowledge or skills (54%), the need for human oversight (41%) and uncertainty about risk (39%). Its guidance recommends aligning adoption with enterprise priorities, assessing readiness, using structured pilots and monitoring performance as deployment scales.

  1. Choose a bounded task. Start with a defined operational need, such as assisting with alert triage, rather than deploying an AI system without a clear purpose.
  2. Assess readiness. Review the relevant processes, data quality and provenance, infrastructure, staff skills and governance arrangements before selecting or expanding a use case.
  3. Set authority and approval rules. Decide which actions an AI system may recommend, which require human approval and which it must not take. Apply particular care where actions are high-impact or difficult to reverse.
  4. Run a structured pilot. Compare outputs with evidence and established procedures, record errors and escalations, and check whether the system performs appropriately for the task before scaling it.
  5. Log decisions and assign accountability. Keep a record of relevant inputs, recommendations, approvals and actions so the team can review incidents and understand who owns each decision.
  6. Monitor after deployment. Reassess performance, access, data and workflow effects as conditions change; a successful pilot does not establish that a system will remain suitable at larger scale.

These steps create a way to test and govern a use case; they do not guarantee safety. The degree of human review should reflect the consequences and reversibility of an action, the sensitivity of accessible data and the system’s privileges.

What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell teams

The WEF’s 2026 figures describe surveyed organizations, while ISC2’s 2026 findings describe 856 cybersecurity professionals who were already using AI and were asked about changes over the previous year. Neither source provides a universal forecast for jobs, adoption or effectiveness. NIST’s agent-security page summarizes RFI commenters’ views, and its AI workforce competency material was presented for public comment in 2025.

Historical figures should also be kept in their proper context: in the WEF’s 2025 outlook, 66% of respondents expected AI to have the most significant impact on cybersecurity in the year ahead, while 37% reported having processes to assess AI tool security before deployment. Those expectations and reported processes are not the same measure as the WEF’s 2026 adoption findings.

For an individual organization, the practical question is not whether AI is automatically good or bad for security work. It is whether a particular use case has a clear purpose, appropriate permissions, trustworthy inputs, a workable review path and an accountable owner—and whether a pilot provides enough evidence to justify expanding it.
