Android phone makers could answer a specific complaint about Apple’s Camera Control with a familiar camera feature: a physical shutter button that focuses on a half-press and takes the picture on a full press. That is a proposal, not a confirmed feature on any current Android phone covered by the available manufacturer documentation. The “mistake” framing comes from a TechRadar opinion piece by Philip Berne, published January 1, 2026—not an established verdict about Apple’s camera or what all phone owners prefer.

What Android makers are being asked to build

The idea is a two-stage physical shutter. Press the button partway to focus; press it farther to capture. In his TechRadar opinion piece, Philip Berne argues that a dedicated button used this way could make taking a picture feel more like using a conventional camera. He also suggests that pressing a button while holding the phone at its sides may disturb framing less than tapping the screen. The article does not provide a controlled test of that stability claim, so it is a rationale for the design, not a measured result. Read Berne’s opinion at TechRadar.

Berne’s criticism is that Apple’s Camera Control draws attention to adjustments such as zoom, exposure and lens selection rather than making a half-press-to-focus, full-press-to-shoot action its central use. That is his evaluation of the interaction. It does not establish that Camera Control is technically deficient or that users generally prefer a traditional shutter.

What Apple’s Camera Control and other capture options do

Apple’s documentation confirms that Camera Control on supported iPhone models can open Camera with a click and take a photo with another click. It also lists the on-screen shutter and either volume button as ways to take a photo; certain AirPods and Apple Watch Camera Remote can trigger capture as well. These options mean the proposal is not simply “give iPhone a physical way to take a picture.” The narrower distinction is the proposed two-stage action: focus on a half-press, then capture on a full press.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Apple’s guide describes the supported inputs and operation, not a comparison of how steady or convenient each is. For details on which controls apply to a particular model and software version, consult Apple’s iPhone camera basics guide.

What Pixel and Samsung camera controls show—and don’t show

Google Pixel

Google documents several software controls in Pixel Camera. On the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel 9 and later, users can manually choose a lens; the available choices vary by device and can include ultrawide, wide and telephoto. Google also explains how to tap a subject to focus and lock focus and exposure for a moving subject. Its camera-settings guidance covers options such as RAW plus JPEG and quick-access viewfinder controls, with availability depending on model and feature. These examples show software flexibility, not a physical side button with a half-press focus stage.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Samsung Galaxy S25

Samsung’s India support page, last updated March 18, 2025, describes changes to the camera-screen settings layout on the Galaxy S25 with One UI 7. It establishes that the interface changed; it does not document the proposed two-stage physical shutter. The page’s scope is India support for that camera interface, not a survey of every Samsung model or region. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 camera-layout explanation.

Is a phone with this button available?

The cited manufacturer documentation does not verify the half-press-focus/full-press-capture behavior on a named current Android phone. Berne mentions Google and Samsung as companies that could pursue the concept, and speculates about a possible OnePlus 16; that mention is not a product announcement or confirmation. A Pixel phone, for example, may be relevant if you want an Android camera phone, but the cited Pixel guidance is not evidence that Pixel 10—or any other named model—has the proposed shutter.

So the accurate answer is that the idea is an open product opportunity, not a confirmed Android feature. A real device comparison would need to check the exact model, software version and region, and confirm the behavior in the phone’s native camera app. It would also need to test whether the button actually reduces framing movement rather than assume it does.

What to look for if a manufacturer adopts the idea

A button that merely launches the camera or takes a picture would not implement the full proposal. To assess a phone against it, check these points:

  • Two distinct press stages: Does a partial press focus, and does a further press capture?
  • Native-camera behavior: Does the interaction work in the phone’s built-in camera app, and does half-press focus lock or adjust focus?
  • Direct capture: Can the button take a photo without requiring an additional on-screen shutter action?
  • Practical steadiness: Does repeatable testing show less framing movement than touch capture? A physical button alone does not prove that it will.
  • Alternatives and availability: What volume-button, touch-shutter or remote-capture options exist, and on which model, software version and regional variant?

The underlying argument is appealing because it is concrete: make the physical input behave like a camera shutter rather than asking the user to treat a multifunction control as one. Whether that design is better in practice remains a question for actual phone implementations and testing—not something established by the opinion article or the manufacturer help pages.
