The finding raises questions about how reliable the evidence is; it does not prove that industry funding caused favorable results or that collagen cannot affect any other health outcome.
What did the 2025 review find?
Myung and colleagues’ 2025 meta-analysis examined 23 randomized controlled trials involving 1,474 participants and focused on skin aging. When they pooled results across all included trials, they found improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles. The pattern changed in subgroup analyses: studies without pharmaceutical-company funding did not show effects on those outcomes, and studies rated high quality did not show significant effects in any category. The authors concluded: “There is currently no clinical evidence to support the use of collagen supplements to prevent or treat skin aging.” That is their conclusion about the clinical evidence they reviewed—not a statement from a regulator or proof that collagen has no possible effect for other purposes.
What the funding subgroup does—and does not—show
A difference between funded and unfunded study subgroups is a reason to scrutinize the evidence. It does not establish that funding caused the difference, that every favorable trial was industry-funded, or that every industry-supported study is unreliable. The review’s subgroup result is an association within its analysis, not a demonstration of cause.

The available account of the review does not independently verify each trial’s funding disclosures, underlying data or conflict declarations. Those details matter when deciding how strongly to interpret the subgroup finding.
How does this compare with earlier reviews?
The 2023 skin-focused meta-analysis
Pu and colleagues’ 2023 meta-analysis included 26 randomized controlled trials and 1,721 participants and reported pooled benefits for skin outcomes. It also identified risk-of-bias concerns: 13 included studies had missing outcome data. Its authors called for larger randomized trials. The positive pooled result and the limitations in the underlying studies belong in the same assessment; one does not erase the other. Read the 2023 review.

The 2025 umbrella review
A broader 2025 umbrella review assessed 16 meta-analyses spanning 113 randomized trials and 7,983 participants. Its scope covered outcomes beyond skin aging, so its overall conclusions are not a direct answer to whether collagen prevents or treats skin aging. It also found substantial quality concerns among the reviews it appraised using AMSTAR 2: one was rated high quality, four low quality and the remaining 11 critically low quality. These reviews are not interchangeable. They ask different questions, cover different outcomes and bodies of trials, and assess evidence at different levels. The 2025 skin-aging review’s funding and quality subgroup analyses address why the overall pooled result may not be robust; the umbrella review evaluates a much broader set of existing reviews, whose methodological quality was mostly low or critically low.

What did the collagen industry say?
On August 5, 2025, GROW—the representative body for the gelatin and collagen peptide industry—challenged the 2025 skin-aging review’s subgroup methods and interpretations. GROW stated: “Funding alone does not compromise scientific integrity when proper methodology and peer review are followed.” That is a relevant counterpoint, but it comes from an industry representative body, not an independent reanalysis of the review. The disagreement is best understood as a dispute about how to interpret pooled evidence and subgroup analyses. GROW’s criticism does not itself settle whether the review’s methods were sound, just as the review’s funding subgroup does not prove sponsor bias.

Do collagen supplements actually work for skin?
The reviews do not support a simple yes-or-no answer with high confidence. Some pooled analyses report improvements, but the 2025 skin-aging review found that those effects were not significant in its high-quality-study subgroup or among studies without pharmaceutical-company funding. The earlier skin-focused review also reported missing outcome data in a substantial portion of its included trials, while the broader umbrella review found that most appraised meta-analyses were low or critically low quality.
For a reader deciding whether to take collagen for skin aging, the practical conclusion is that benefit has not been established reliably by the evidence described here. These findings concern research across products and trials; they do not establish the effectiveness of a particular retail brand.

How to read claims about collagen research
- Check the outcome. Evidence about skin aging is not automatically evidence about other health outcomes.
- Look beyond the overall pooled estimate. Ask whether the review reports results by study quality and funding source, and whether those restricted analyses agree with the headline result.
- Notice the evidence quality. A meta-analysis can pool trials, but pooling does not fix missing data or other weaknesses in the trials—or in the review itself.
- Separate association from cause. A difference between funded and unfunded studies is not proof that funding produced the difference.
- Distinguish a critique from a reanalysis. An interested organization’s objections may warrant consideration, but they are not the same as an independent reassessment of trial data.
