OpenAI says testing will begin later in October with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI’s announcement does not promise a broader rollout beyond this test.
The headline “OpenAI Decides ChatGPT Would Be Better With More Sponsored Results” is the framing of an AJ Dellinger article updated October 6, 2026, not a statement of OpenAI’s position. OpenAI presents the format as a way to help make AI broadly accessible and give businesses another way to reach people exploring ideas and products.
Who is included in the initial test?
The planned initial test is limited to ChatGPT Free and Go plan users in the United States. OpenAI has not stated a date for other countries or plans, or said that visual ads will be added outside image generation. These boundaries describe the announced test, not a permanent policy.
The AOL article says Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers will be excluded from ads and describes earlier text ads at the end of model outputs. That account concerns existing placements; it is distinct from OpenAI’s new visual format, which the company says will appear during image generation.

How OpenAI says the ads will work
OpenAI says visual ads will be clearly labeled and separate from the image being created. It also says advertising does not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Those are the company’s stated product principles; the announcement does not independently verify how the format will work in practice.
OpenAI says its placement safeguards are designed to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or otherwise unsuitable contexts. The company says it will use automated review, human oversight, and ongoing monitoring to identify policy violations and improve safeguards. It also says its brand-suitability work with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will run in a controlled testing environment without access to private user conversations. These are announced measures, not independently audited results.

What the early advertiser figures show—and do not show

These are attributed partner results, not a neutral cross-platform comparison or independently reproduced causal evidence in the announcement. OpenAI describes its incrementality work as early-stage. The AOL article separately characterizes advertiser returns as underwhelming, but the cited passage does not identify a specific study or dataset; that should be read as the article’s assessment, not as an established industry-wide finding.
