Pixel Game Squad reportedly found game-development materials—including apparent design documents, concept art and chips believed to contain prototypes—in a storage unit bought at auction. Kotaku’s October 6, 2026, account says some of the contents went to multiple collectors, but does not establish who received them or where they are now. What Pixel Game Squad reportedly found
Kotaku reported that the owners of the Pixel Game Squad YouTube channel bought a storage unit at auction and posted a video showing its contents. According to Kotaku’s account of that video, the unit held a mix of vintage games, hardware, artwork, anime box sets, strategy guides, movies and toys, alongside materials that appeared to document game development.
The reported production materials included design documents, concept art and computer chips believed to contain game prototypes. Kotaku’s examples included:
- Chips believed to hold prototypes, including one for Contra III: The Alien Wars.
- Artbooks with level designs for Double Dragon.
- A Virgin Interactive folio containing documents about a Terminator game.
- Level-design layouts for the Super Nintendo game B.O.B..
These descriptions reflect Kotaku’s reporting about the video; the objects and their identifications have not been independently authenticated here. The report does not provide a complete inventory.

Why the possible Tom Tanaka connection matters—and what remains unconfirmed
Kotaku says the storage unit is believed to have belonged to developer Tom Tanaka, but explicitly notes that this has not been confirmed. The report says some materials bear Tanaka’s name and identifies his credits as a level designer on The Terminator for Sega CD and an animator on Double Dragon for Game Gear. A name on materials and related credits do not, by themselves, prove who owned the unit.
Kotaku also recounts a YouTube commenter’s claim that they worked with Tanaka at Virgin Games in the early 1990s, lost touch with him around 2020 and feared the worst. That is the commenter’s account, not independent confirmation of Tanaka’s circumstances. The available reporting does not resolve his identity or situation.

What is known about the sale and current access
Kotaku says Aaron Stapish, known as Riff, found the materials in the video and reports his comment that much more gaming history had gone to many collectors. The story does not identify those collectors, state the auction’s price or location, or establish where each artifact is now. It also does not show whether the items are available to researchers or the public.
That uncertainty is central to the preservation concern. Private collectors can keep objects safe, document them or make them accessible, but the report does not establish what any recipient plans to do. Nor does it establish that the materials will be permanently inaccessible. Without a confirmed inventory, custody record or access policy, the items’ long-term discoverability remains an open question.

Why viewers are concerned about preservation
Development records can help explain how games were designed and made: level layouts, concept art and prototype builds may preserve details not visible in a finished release. If the reported identifications are accurate, the materials could be useful to people studying the development of the named games. Their value for research depends not only on survival, but also on whether they can be identified, contextualized and examined.
Kotaku says commenters called for the materials to go to a museum, with some naming the Video Game History Foundation. The report does not say the Foundation received or evaluated any items, agreed to preserve them, or issued an official custody plan.

Frank Cifaldi, identified by Kotaku as the Foundation’s director, reacted on Bluesky. Kotaku reproduced his words: “I’m not saying they did anything wrong, it’s just deeply unsettling to think about.” This expresses concern about the situation; it is not a finding that the buyers or collectors did anything wrong.
Kotaku also quoted an unnamed commenter saying, “This is not stuff that should be sitting on the shelf of some collector that views it as another purchase,”. That is an individual commenter’s view, not an institutional position. The broader question is how potentially fragile development records can remain preserved and discoverable when an auction disperses them into private hands. Museum custody is one possible route, but the report does not establish that it is the only suitable one or that it has happened.

What the report does not establish
- A verified owner for the storage unit or a confirmed link between the full collection and Tanaka.
- Authentication of the reported prototype chips, documents or artwork.
- A complete inventory, sale price, auction location or list of recipients.
- The present location, condition or accessibility of each item.
- Any transfer to, evaluation by or preservation commitment from the Video Game History Foundation or another institution.
