System Informer can help answer questions Task Manager may not make easy to investigate: which process was active during a resource spike, what is keeping a file open, and which program owns a network connection. Its advantage is extra detail and inspection tools—not proof that Task Manager is useless. Microsoft describes Task Manager as Windows’ built-in tool for monitoring application and process performance and resource use, and documents troubleshooting workflows of its own.
What System Informer adds to Windows troubleshooting
System Informer brings process activity, resource graphs, network connections, disk activity, services, stack traces, and GPU usage into one utility. These views help you gather clues and inspect what Windows is doing; they do not automatically identify the root cause of every slowdown or suspicious activity.
The practical difference is often how far you can follow a clue. A resource graph can lead to a process, a handle search can identify the owner of a locked file, and a connection view can show which process is communicating. Task Manager remains a useful first stop for routine monitoring. The available appearance and data in Task Manager can vary by Windows version. Microsoft’s Task Manager troubleshooting documentation describes its built-in role and workflows; System Informer’s feature page lists the additional inspection capabilities.
How to trace a CPU, memory, I/O, or GPU spike
- Open System Information with Ctrl+I, as documented on the feature page.
- Inspect the resource graphs and hover over a point to see its tooltip.
- Double-click a data point to inspect the process associated with it.
This can be more useful than checking a process list after the fact: the process responsible for a peak may have exited before you start investigating. The graph helps connect an event to a process, but the association is a starting point for diagnosis, not an explanation of why the process used those resources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to find the process using a file
- Press Ctrl+F to search for a handle or DLL.
- Search for the file name and inspect the process associated with the result.
- Use the process identity to decide what to do next—for example, whether to close the application normally or investigate why it is using the file.
Identifying the owner is safer than immediately forcing the file free. System Informer warns that closing a handle is a last resort because it can cause data loss or corruption. Do not treat handle closure as routine file cleanup.
How to see which program is using your network
Inspect active connections and the processes associated with them to investigate unexpected network activity. An unfamiliar connection is not, by itself, evidence of malware: identify the owning process and consider what the program is before taking action. System Informer documents the ability to close a connection or process, but that is an intervention—not a diagnosis—and ending the wrong process may interrupt legitimate work.

Network information supplied by the ExtendedTools plugin is available when System Informer runs with administrative rights. This is a permission condition for that plugin-provided view, not a requirement to run the entire application elevated in every situation. The project readme describes the plugin condition.
How to investigate unexpected disk activity
Use the disk access and disk usage/statistics views to inspect which processes are doing disk work and when. As with network activity, these views expose activity for you to interpret; they do not establish that a process is the underlying cause of a broader performance problem.

Disk information provided by ExtendedTools requires administrative rights. If the detail you need is unavailable, check whether the plugin is enabled and whether System Informer is running with the required privileges.
How to inspect services and drivers
System Informer provides service management, including controls to create, edit, and control services. Its feature page notes that driver services appear by default in the service list. This can help when tracing which service or driver is involved in a problem, but the presence of a control does not make changing a service safe for every PC. Identify the service and understand its role before editing or stopping it; an incorrect change can disrupt Windows or an application.

When deeper inspection is useful
For developer or administrator diagnosis, the project documents detailed stack traces with kernel-mode, WOW64, and .NET support. Its 4.0 release notes also describe a driver-backed Process Monitor and optional Hybrid Analysis integration. These are release-specific capabilities: check that your installed release includes them and that any optional integration is configured before relying on them. The project’s release notes describe changes by version.

| Troubleshooting need | Task Manager | System Informer |
|---|---|---|
| Routine process and resource monitoring | Windows’ in-box tool for monitoring application/process performance and resource use; available data varies by Windows version. | Provides process activity and additional resource views. |
| Relating a past graph peak to a process | Microsoft documents troubleshooting features, but the cited Task Manager documentation does not establish an equivalent graph-to-process lookup. | Graph tooltips and double-click process lookup are documented on the feature page, including for a process that is no longer running. |
| Finding the process holding a file | The cited Microsoft documentation does not establish a matching handle/DLL search workflow. | Ctrl+F searches for a handle or DLL and identifies the associated process; closing a handle is a last resort that can cause data loss or corruption. |
| Inspecting disk and network activity | Monitoring and troubleshooting features are documented by Microsoft; the cited page does not establish the same views or detail. | Disk and network detail is documented; ExtendedTools plugin-provided information requires administrative rights. |
| Services, drivers, and deeper process inspection | Useful for in-box monitoring and troubleshooting. | Includes service controls, driver services in the list by default, and detailed stack traces; capabilities vary by release and configuration. |
This is a comparison of documented capabilities and workflows, not a measured performance ranking. Use Task Manager when its view answers the question; switch to System Informer when you need the additional inspection detail.

Download and Windows compatibility
The official downloads page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 and offers setup and portable distributions for 32-bit or 64-bit systems. It listed build 4.0.26241 on October 7, 2026; version listings can change, so check the current downloads page for the latest build and supported systems. The project readme describes a portable option that can run from a USB flash drive with settings kept alongside it, but removable storage is optional.
The project’s release notes say 4.0 introduced Process Monitor and opt-in Hybrid Analysis integration, among other changes. Do not assume those features are present in an earlier installed version or enabled by default.
