Some Android apps are useful without costing anything; paying makes sense only when a specific limit or feature matters to you. These five are candidates for that kind of upgrade: Bitwarden for password-management extras, TickTick for its Premium tier, Proton VPN for expanded VPN access, and Sleep as Android for sleep-tracking tools. The fifth pick, Tasker, is a discovery candidate rather than a verified current recommendation: check its Play listing and current price before buying. I can’t claim personal use or spending on the evidence available, so this is a feature-and-fit guide, not a first-person review.
What makes a free Android app worth paying for?
“Free to download” does not mean the free version is either complete or merely a trial. The useful question is what you can do without paying, what the upgrade adds, and whether that addition solves a problem you actually have. Google Play supports subscriptions for premium features or services in some apps; whether a subscription is visible or purchasable can depend on age criteria and developer settings. Google Play’s subscriptions guidance explains the general model.
The picks below are based on the documented plan details available as of October 2026. Prices are in US dollars where specified; local Play Store pricing and availability may differ. For apps whose current prices or tier limits are not established here, check the app’s listing before you commit.
1. Bitwarden: pay for security extras, not basic password storage
Bitwarden’s official pricing page labels its basic password-management plan “Always free” and lists unlimited passwords and devices. That makes the free plan a substantial option for someone who wants to store and sync logins without paying.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What Premium adds
Bitwarden lists Premium at USD 1.65 per month when billed annually, or USD 19.80 for the year. Its paid features include an integrated authenticator, file attachments, emergency access, and security reports, among other extras. See Bitwarden’s pricing page for the current plan details.
Premium is a better fit if you will use those additional tools—for example, storing attachments with vault items or arranging emergency access—than if all you need is password storage across devices. The listed price is annual billing, not a month-to-month rate.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
2. TickTick: consider Premium if its paid features fit your planning routine
TickTick’s official upgrade page lists an annual Premium plan for USD 49.99, described as less than USD 4.17 per month. The page does not establish the exact feature differences or an Android in-app price, so check the plan details shown in your account and Play Store before upgrading. The annual figure is from TickTick’s upgrade page.
What happens if you stop paying?
TickTick says data is retained when Premium expires and the account can continue as a free user, while Premium features stop being available. That makes the choice less risky for someone who wants to try the paid tier without treating the subscription as permanent; do not assume that every premium capability will remain accessible after expiry.

- Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
Because the precise feature split is not established on the cited upgrade page, compare the current in-app plan description with the features you actually rely on before paying. The annual price is most compelling when the specific Premium tools are part of your regular workflow.
3. Proton VPN: keep the free plan if it already meets your needs
Proton VPN’s official FAQ says its Free plan has no data limits or artificial speed limits. The paid plans add faster speeds, servers in more than 140 countries, and advanced features, according to Proton’s plan FAQ.

That makes an upgrade relevant if you need the paid plan’s broader server access or other advanced features. If the free plan serves your use case, the documented details do not make paying a requirement. The stated server count applies to paid-plan access as described by Proton; it is not a claim that the free plan reaches those locations, nor a guarantee of any particular security outcome.
4. Sleep as Android: pay only if you will use its sleep tools
Sleep as Android’s official site describes sleep-phase tracking through phone or wearable sensors, a smart alarm, lullabies, snore recording, and CAPTCHA tasks intended to get users out of bed. It also links to a free trial. The feature overview is on Sleep as Android’s official site.

The cited page does not establish the current full price or all limits of the free tier. Treat the trial as a way to see whether the tracking and alarm features suit you, then check the current Google Play listing for the price, billing terms, and what remains available after the trial. It is a plausible paid app for someone who will actively use its sleep and wake-up tools, not an automatic upgrade for everyone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Tasker: verify the current listing before buying
Tasker appears among Android app candidates in an Android Authority overview published in April 2025. That article is useful for discovery, but it does not establish Tasker’s current Android availability, price, or present-day feature limits. Android Authority’s overview is older than the plan information above, so use the current Play listing as the authority on whether the app is available to you and what it costs.
With no verified current pricing or free-versus-paid breakdown here, I can’t responsibly say what a Tasker purchase would unlock or who should pay. Include it on a shortlist only if its current listing describes a feature you need; otherwise, skip it rather than buying on reputation alone.

How to decide whether to upgrade on Android
- Identify the limit or feature you need. Do not pay merely because an app labels a tier Premium. Name the feature that would change how you use it.
- Check the current Google Play listing or in-app upgrade screen. Confirm the local price, currency, billing period, trial terms, and what the paid tier includes. Prices and purchase options can vary by region or channel.
- Check what happens after cancellation or expiry. TickTick explicitly says users can return to its free version with data retained, while Premium features stop. Do not assume other apps handle expiry the same way.
- Keep the free tier when it already does the job. That is especially reasonable for Bitwarden’s stated basic password management or Proton VPN’s documented no-data-limit free plan if their free features meet your needs.
For Sleep as Android and Tasker in particular, current local listing details are essential: the cited sources do not settle their full prices and tier boundaries. For TickTick, confirm the feature split before purchasing because the official upgrade page gives an annual price and expiry behavior but not the precise differences.
