The result shows a response under specific test conditions, not a universal hearing limit for sharks or proof they can detect every sound at that distance.
How far away can sharks hear?
The maximum response distance reported was 74 m (243 ft), rounded to “nearly 250 feet.” The study tracked free-swimming blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) in shallow coastal waters off Palm Beach County, Florida. The figure applies to responses to the study’s tested sounds in that setting; it is not a fixed maximum hearing distance for all sharks or sounds.
The researchers tested three low-frequency bands and a high-frequency control:
| Sound tested | Observed result |
|---|---|
| 100–200 Hz | Sharks responded to low-frequency stimuli. |
| 200–400 Hz | Sharks responded to low-frequency stimuli. |
| 400–800 Hz | Sharks responded to low-frequency stimuli. |
| 10 kHz control | No response was observed; researchers described it as outside the known hearing range. |
Florida Atlantic University’s study summary reports that more than 70% of responses occurred in the acoustic far field. Lower-frequency sounds were detected at greater distances and lower sound levels. These are findings about the particular stimuli and experiment, not a claim that any sound in those bands will be heard at 243 feet. Florida Atlantic University’s study summary and the peer-reviewed study in Integrative Organismal Biology describe the results.

Can sharks tell where a sound comes from?
In the experiment, sharks rapidly changed course away from the sound source. The authors interpret this oriented movement as evidence that the animals could determine the sound’s direction in the test conditions. It does not demonstrate that every shark can precisely locate every underwater sound.
The researchers propose that sharks detect particle motion associated with sound, including at considerable distances. That is an explanation of the findings, not a mechanism conclusively established by this experiment. Sharks lack the gas-filled swim bladder found in many bony fish; they are thought to rely on their inner ears, including a specialized structure called the macula neglecta, to detect movement and vibrations.

How did researchers test sharks in the ocean?
The team played controlled underwater sounds while an aerial drone tracked the sharks. Calibrated hydrophones measured sound levels at different distances. The sound source drifted as far as 19 m from the anchored boat to reduce the boat’s influence on the test.
Researchers used high-intensity sounds to startle the sharks, not to attract them. The ocean setting also avoided tank-wall reflections that can complicate hearing experiments. As lead author Caroline Sullivan explained, tank sounds can bounce off walls and create “complex and confusing signals”; she said ocean experiments with wild sharks help capture a natural response. Florida Atlantic University’s release provides her comments and the experiment overview.

What the 250-foot finding does—and does not—show
- It shows: free-swimming blacktip sharks in one South Florida field study reacted to the tested low-frequency sounds from as far as 74 m (243 ft).
- It supports: an inference that the sharks could orient away from the sound source under the experimental conditions.
- It does not establish: a universal hearing range for sharks, a maximum distance for all sounds, or a prey-attraction effect.
- Its scope is limited: one species, particular frequency bands and intensities, and a specific shallow-water field setting.
For broader context, Hawaiʻi’s Department of Land and Natural Resources says sharks seem to hear best in the 20–300 Hz range and notes that detection distance depends on a sound source’s magnitude and distance. Its page also mentions reports of attraction from over a mile in some tests. That is a different outcome from this study’s measured response distance, so the figures should not be treated as competing estimates of one universal range. Hawaiʻi DLNR’s shark senses page.
