Selected reviews praise its co-op, cover shooting, and Emergence Day atmosphere, but they do not prove that Xbox broadly avoids local co-op. The narrower point is compelling enough: E-Day makes playing together on one console part of the campaign, not an afterthought.
Why split-screen is the point reviewers help clarify
The title’s claim that Xbox “keeps avoiding” split-screen needs narrowing. The official E-Day page confirms two-player split-screen campaign play, but the sources available do not establish a pattern across Xbox’s wider game catalogue. What can be said is that local co-op is a clear part of E-Day’s offering—and it helps explain why reviewers have singled out the game’s co-op appeal.
Windows Central calls E-Day “a fantastic co-op shooter” and says it is especially fun with a partner. Creative Bloq’s review, which focused on solo campaign play, also notes that online co-op, Horde, and Versus are available. These are individual reviewers’ assessments, not a formal review aggregate. Together, they point to a useful distinction: E-Day can be played alone, but its campaign is also built to be shared.
What the reviews praise—and where they differ
Across the selected reviews, cover-based combat and the game’s depiction of Emergence Day are recurring strengths. The praise is not unanimous about how well the campaign sustains those strengths.

| Publication | What it praises | Qualification or criticism |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Central | Weapons, the returning Gears feel, horror atmosphere, and co-op. | Its review was in progress. It criticizes an “open-but-not-actually-open” campaign structure and says some large enemies feel unresponsive or like bullet sponges. |
| GamesRadar+ | Cover shooting and the setting’s attention to Kalona’s destruction and civilian experience. | At access time, the review was still in progress; multiplayer coverage and a final score were pending. |
| Tom’s Guide | Cover shooting, environments, and weapon and equipment loadouts. | It calls E-Day the franchise’s best game since Gears of War 3—that is the publication’s judgment, not a consensus ranking. |
| Creative Bloq | Weapon mods, explorable mini-sandboxes, and expanded movement and combat options. | Its review covered solo campaign play and finds the game strongest when it focuses on Emergence Day’s opening violence and the city’s collapse. |
The common thread is a return to cover combat and a strong sense of place, with co-op a notable part of the appeal. The disagreements—especially around campaign pacing and big-enemy encounters—matter if you are deciding whether this is a strong solo campaign as well as a good game to play with someone else.
How E-Day supports solo, local, and online play
Xbox describes E-Day as an origin-story campaign set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, centered on Emergence Day and the early story of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. The official game page lists three campaign formats:

The distinction is practical: split-screen is the option for sharing one console and display, while online co-op supports a larger group. Xbox also lists the game for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, with Xbox Play Anywhere and shared progression across Xbox and PC. The Xbox Wire launch announcement additionally lists Steam PC availability. Check the platform’s current store page for the purchase and availability terms that apply to you.
Choosing how to play or access the game

E-Day is a concrete example of a major Xbox release offering split-screen campaign co-op. That makes the feature easy to value, particularly for friends or family who prefer playing together in the same room. It does not, on the evidence here, prove that Xbox as a whole avoids local multiplayer or that this is a universal gap in its release slate.

The official Gears of War page acknowledges a limit to what made launch: “The trade-off being that including every legacy feature from Gears of War was not possible for launch.” That statement is not a promise about future updates or a specific missing feature. For this game, the useful takeaway is narrower: the campaign supports split-screen, alongside solo and online play, while the sampled reviews see co-op as one of its strengths.
Quick Recap
Who is most likely to enjoy E-Day?
- Play with someone on the same console: Split-screen campaign support makes E-Day a particularly relevant choice for local co-op.
- Want a group campaign: The campaign supports up to four players online.
- Prefer solo play: The campaign is playable alone, and Creative Bloq’s solo-focused review highlights the setting and combat options.
- Expect a uniformly praised campaign: Reviews sampled here disagree about structure and large-enemy encounters, and at least two were still in progress when accessed.
