Its README says it turns off Apple Intelligence features, deletes the downloaded models, and stops macOS from downloading them again. MacRumors reported that those models take up about 12 GB or more, and that some users saw larger totals. That figure is a reported estimate, not a guarantee. The space you recover depends on what is installed on your Mac.
The trade is simple: you get storage back, and you lose the Apple Intelligence features that depend on those models. This guide covers what you lose, how the tool is documented to work, how to preview the change safely, and what Apple’s own storage tools offer instead.
What you give up
MacRumors lists these features as affected by removing the models:
- Siri-related AI features
- Writing Tools
- Genmoji and Image Playground
- ChatGPT integration
- Summaries, smart replies and inline predictions
- Photos Clean Up and Spatial Photos
- Xcode predictive completion
Apple’s macOS 27 page presents Siri AI and Apple Intelligence as headline parts of the release. So this is a decision about functionality as well as disk space. If you use none of the features above, the trade is easy. If you rely on Writing Tools or Photos Clean Up, think twice.

How much space will you actually get back?
The “12 GB” number comes from MacRumors’ reporting of approximate model storage. It is not an Apple statistic, and we have not independently measured it. Your result depends on which models your Mac has downloaded. The RemoveMacAI README says its status command reports model sizes, though some sizes may show as unknown. Run that first and treat it as your real estimate, then compare your free space in System Settings before and after.

Everything here comes from the project’s README, not from Apple. Apple does not document or endorse this utility. Check the README for current commands before you run anything, because the project can change.

Installing
The README gives three routes: a one-line installer you paste into Terminal, a manual download with a checksum check, and a Homebrew option. The installer fetches the latest release, verifies its SHA-256 checksum, and runs it from a temporary directory. The repository also describes a release provenance attestation. Those are the project’s own claims, not an independent security review. If you are wary of piping a script into your shell, use the manual download and verify the checksum yourself.
Checking state and previewing changes
- Run
removemacai statusto see which features are active and how large the models are. - Run
removemacai off --dry-runto preview what would change without changing it. - If you want to keep certain capabilities, the README documents a
--keepoption. Check the README for its exact arguments.
Applying the change
When you run the real command, the tool shows the current state and asks for confirmation. It then opens System Settings so you can approve its configuration profile. Model removal happens after that approval. If removal fails or can’t be confirmed, the README says the command exits with an error and leaves the configuration profile active. It advises reading the warnings and checking status before you retry.

Undoing it
The README documents removemacai revert to reverse the change, and states: “All changes can be reverted.” That is the developer’s claim. Reverting re-enables the features, but you should assume the models will need to download again, so you would need the space and a connection. That last point is our inference; the README is the authority on exactly what revert does.
Apple’s own storage options
Apple’s support page covers general cleanup, and it does not mention RemoveMacAI or removing Apple Intelligence models. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, go to System Settings > General > Storage. Apple describes System Data as a catch-all for Apple and third-party files that don’t fit another category. Its suggestions are:

- Review large files and delete unneeded downloads or media.
- Uninstall apps you don’t use.
- Move libraries to external storage.
- Empty the Bin.
Apple also notes that starting in safe mode may temporarily clear certain system caches, which are recreated automatically as needed.

Start with Apple’s Storage panel. If the biggest recoverable item is the AI models and you don’t use the features, RemoveMacAI is a reasonable option. Run status and a dry run first, back up your Mac, and accept that you are relying on third-party software that no one has independently audited.
