If your WordPress site already has a backlog of published posts, start with the AI features in the SEO plugin you already run. Switch plugins only if the backlog needs something that plugin can’t do. The right pick depends on the task: missing metadata, weak on-page wording, bulk review, internal links, or image descriptions. A generic “AI SEO” label doesn’t tell you that. This guide matches each task to the plugin that documents it. It also covers what to check before you let AI touch old posts.
Start with the backlog, not the plugin
Sort your archive into piles before comparing tools. A 40-article refresh rarely needs one thing. Typically some posts have no meta description, some have titles worth keeping, and some have copy that needs editing. Each pile maps to a different feature. The comparison by Radu Tyrsina on Search Engine Watch frames the decision the same way. It is a documentation-based comparison published October 5, 2026 and checked October 3, 2026. It is not hands-on testing, and I treat it that way here.
The shortlist by task
Yoast SEO: keyphrase checks and metadata on existing posts
Yoast’s official FAQ says: “You can use the AI features for both new and existing content.” The AI title and description generator supports posts, pages, products, categories and tags. AI Optimize is available for posts and pages. According to Yoast’s AI Optimize instructions, it works on five checks:
- keyphrase in the introduction
- keyphrase density
- keyphrase distribution
- paragraph length
- sentence length
Some features need Premium or WooCommerce SEO, and free users get a limited number of “sparks” (Yoast FAQ). The same FAQ carries a caveat worth keeping: “However, the quality of suggestions may vary and do not directly impact your search engine rankings.”

All in One SEO: multi-part rewrites with revert
AIOSEO’s Optimize with AI runs inside the post editor. AIOSEO says one pass can rewrite the SEO title, meta description, headline, and content or readability issues. It creates a WordPress revision and lets you revert individual changes. That per-change control suits old posts whose existing titles are worth keeping. Which plan includes the feature is a vendor claim that can change, so check the plugin listing and pricing page.
Rank Math and SEOPress: bulk metadata and images
The Search Engine Watch comparison describes Rank Math’s bulk metadata options for selected items. It also describes SEOPress PRO’s bulk metadata and image work, billed through your own provider key or managed credits. Link Whisper: inbound internal links from older posts
If the gap is internal linking, the same comparison describes Link Whisper’s workflow. You pick a destination post, and the tool searches older content for places to link from. It is a specialist add-on, not a general SEO suite. Read each suggested source passage before inserting a link.

The same comparison summarizes Yoast’s limits as 100 requests per day and 3,000 per month per subscription or site, plus shorter-window limits. Check Yoast’s current documentation before sizing a large archive against that. Your real cost also includes the AI plan or credits, any provider billing, taxes, and the editor time spent reviewing output. Review time is usually the largest of these.
If you’d have to migrate
AIOSEO’s listing says its importer migrates SEO titles, descriptions and settings from Yoast, Rank Math and SEOPress. SEOPress’s listing also names several supported migration sources. Importers don’t guarantee that every custom field or page-builder setup transfers. Compare a representative sample of posts before and after, and keep a full backup first.

Run a small pilot before touching the archive
This is editorial advice, not a test I ran. Use a pilot of about 10 to 15 posts.
- Pick three groups: posts with missing metadata, posts with strong titles you want to keep, and posts whose copy needs revision.
- Back up the site and save the original title, description and body of each post in a spreadsheet.
- Run the plugin’s AI feature on each post and record the suggestion beside the original.
- Accept changes selectively. Leave good existing metadata alone, and check facts, product names, dates and tone.
- Record the final text and the time each post took. That tells you the real per-post cost before you scale up.
Compare tools on these five axes
- Task coverage: metadata, copy, keyphrase checks, bulk actions, internal links or image descriptions.
- Review control: can you inspect, accept selectively and revert individual edits?
- Archive scale: one post at a time or across selected posts, and what request or credit limits apply?
- Total cost: base tier, AI credits, provider billing, taxes and review time.
- Workflow fit: whether existing SEO fields, your editor or page builder and your team’s process survive.
A note on AI visibility features
Yoast documents schema aggregation and a customizable llms.txt feature on its AI features page. It also says no tool can guarantee placement in AI answers. Treat these as vendor-described capabilities. They are separate from the job of cleaning up an archive.

What the evidence does and doesn’t show
I found no independent experiment or cross-plugin performance test comparing these tools. Don’t expect ranking gains from AI edits alone. These tools speed up editing and give you a reviewable workflow.
The Bottom Line
Test the AI features in your current plugin on a small pilot first. Yoast suits keyphrase and readability checks, and AIOSEO suits selective, revertible rewrites. Rank Math or SEOPress may fit bulk metadata, and Link Whisper fits internal links. Migrate only if the backlog needs a capability your plugin lacks.
