Switching from Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile to a lower-cost prepaid plan or MVNO can reduce your bill, but the advertised price alone does not tell you what changes. Before you move, check how the replacement plan handles data during congestion, coverage and roaming, the features you use, and any remaining device or account costs. The terms vary by plan, so treat these as items to verify—not losses every switcher will face.
1. Data may be treated differently when the network is busy
“Unlimited” does not necessarily mean the same speeds or priority in every situation. A plan may allow high-speed data up to a threshold and then temporarily slow some traffic during congestion. The conditions can differ for phone data and hotspot use, and between plans.
Verizon’s current plan information describes plan-specific thresholds after which data may be temporarily slower than other traffic during congestion. That is a reason to read the exact terms for both your current plan and the one you are considering—not proof that every MVNO is deprioritized or that you will notice a difference. Verizon’s Important Plan Information explains its own plan terms. The FCC’s Communications Marketplace Report also illustrates how plan allowances can be tiered: it described T-Mobile’s Go5G Plus in a 2023 example as including 50 GB of mobile hotspot data and up to 15 GB of high-speed data in Mexico and Canada. Those are historical details, not a current offer.
Look for the plan’s data-management policy and any premium- or high-speed-data threshold. If you often use data in crowded places, ask the destination provider how its policy applies to that specific plan.

2. A shared network does not guarantee identical coverage or roaming
An MVNO may use a major carrier’s network, but that label alone does not establish identical coverage, roaming access, or off-network data rules. A provider may have different agreements or limits for places outside its primary network.
AT&T, for example, says it uses its own network for most coverage and contracts with another carrier in some areas where it has no network. Its support page, last updated December 7, 2022, describes off-network data as limited to the lesser of 100 MB or 20% of total usage during a bill period under the terms on that page; it also says continued use after the stated threshold may lead to loss of data access until the next bill period. Because that page is dated, confirm the current terms with AT&T rather than assuming those limits still apply. AT&T’s off-network data support page explains its stated policy.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Check the coverage map and ask the destination provider about roaming in the places you rely on, including:
- Home and work
- Your regular commute
- Frequently visited towns or rural areas
- Places you travel where you may rely on roaming
3. Hotspot, international service, and extras may not transfer
Make a list of the plan benefits you actually use before comparing replacements. Hotspot data, international allowances, video quality, streaming perks, and connected-device lines can differ even when two plans both advertise unlimited phone data.

Compare the replacement plan’s current terms for each item on your list. For hotspot, check the included allowance and what happens after it runs out, including any speed reduction. For international use, check the destinations, data allowance, and whether the benefit covers roaming or only certain forms of use. Do not assume that an allowance from an older plan description still applies: the FCC’s 2023 Go5G Plus example is historical, not a guide to today’s terms.
4. Your phone balance or promotional credits can change the cost of leaving
Before porting your number, review the device installment balance, remaining promotional credits, and any other obligations tied to your account. A phone that appears discounted may still have payments due, and leaving may affect credits that would otherwise have continued.

Verizon’s customer agreement dated September 26, 2025, says customers canceling service with a device on a monthly installment agreement should check whether the remaining balance must be paid immediately. That is Verizon-specific language; check the agreement and bill for your own carrier and account. Verizon’s agreement also states that, as of August 1, 2025, taxes, governmental charges, and Verizon surcharges could add 15% to 50% to standard monthly access and other charges for the covered services. That figure is specific to the document and covered services, not a general estimate for other carriers or accounts. Verizon’s Customer Agreement and Important Information contains its terms.

Will your current phone work with the new provider?
You may be able to keep your phone if it is unlocked and compatible with the destination provider. Confirm its bring-your-own-device requirements before switching; a device that works on one network is not automatically supported by another. Verizon’s Bring Your Own Device to Verizon Prepaid information, for example, applies to Verizon Prepaid and does not establish compatibility with another provider.
Compare the actual plans before you port your number
Use the plan documents and your account details to compare the costs and conditions that matter to you:
- Recurring monthly cost, including taxes and fees
- Data treatment during congestion and any high-speed-data threshold
- Coverage and roaming at your usual locations
- Hotspot allowance and post-allowance speed
- International destinations and data allowances
- Device compatibility and unlocking requirements
- Remaining installments and promotional credits you could lose
Only the destination provider’s current terms can show what you will receive. A lower monthly price is useful only when the plan still fits your coverage, usage, and device needs.
Satellite coverage announcements are not a switching benefit yet
On May 14, 2026, AT&T said that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon had an agreement in principle to form a joint venture using satellite direct-to-device technology to address coverage gaps. The announcement said definitive agreements and customary closing conditions remained outstanding. It describes a proposed development, not a consumer service you can currently select or evidence that changing plans changes your satellite access. AT&T’s announcement sets out the proposal.
