A 2026 Nature Neuroscience study found that anesthesia changes brain activity in a similar way across six species, from humans to roundworms. In every group, anesthetized brains showed less coordination between regions and shorter-lived local activity. The finding points to a shared signature of anesthesia. It does not show that a worm’s brain, or its experience, is like yours.
What the study did
The paper is titled “Comprehensive profiling of brain dynamics during anesthesia across phylogeny.” According to ScienceAlert’s report, a team led by Oxford neuroscientist Andrea Luppi compared awake and anesthetized neural activity in six species:
- humans
- macaques
- marmosets
- mice
- zebrafish
- nematodes (roundworms)
The animals were not all measured the same way, and they did not all receive the same drug. The anesthetic agents differed by species, so this was not one drug tested across the animal kingdom. The shared result is across species and across anesthetics.
How brain activity was measured
| Group | Measurement method (per ScienceAlert’s report) |
|---|---|
| Humans, macaques, marmosets, mice | Functional MRI (fMRI) |
| Zebrafish, nematodes | Animals genetically modified so active neurons show up through calcium-linked fluorescence |
fMRI tracks blood-flow changes tied to activity across the whole brain. Calcium-linked fluorescence lets researchers watch individual neurons in small, transparent animals. Both methods produce time series of neural activity, which is what allows comparison across such different animals.

What they found
ScienceAlert reports that anesthesia was associated with less coordination between brain regions in all the species sampled. A summary of the paper’s abstract describes the pattern more specifically. Local neural activity had shortened intrinsic timescales, meaning activity in a given area faded faster instead of persisting. Synchrony between regions was also reduced.
In plain terms, under anesthesia each part of the nervous system kept working but became less able to hold information over time or share it with other parts.

Luppi and colleagues put it this way: “Through this unbiased, data-driven approach, we identified an evolutionarily conserved dynamical profile of anesthesia, indicating that what is common across species and anesthetics is not only the behavioral response to anesthesia (isolation from the environment), but also anesthesia’s effect on specific features of neural activity.”
The “final common pathway” idea
Anesthesiologists George Mashour and Zirui Huang wrote accompanying commentary. They said the findings “provide compelling support for a final common pathway of anesthesia: spatiotemporal isolation of local neural activity, in which individual circuits lose their ability to sustain, propagate and integrate information across time and space.”

That is the commentators’ interpretation, not a direct measurement in the experiments. It is a reasonable reading of the data, but it is a hypothesis about mechanism.

Does the brain “turn off” under anesthesia?
No. The findings describe neurons still active but less integrated: shorter local timescales and weaker links between regions. This fits the idea of a brain cut off from its environment, not one that has gone silent.

Is a human brain under anesthesia like a worm’s?
Only in one measured respect. The shared feature is a pattern in neural dynamics. A nematode has a few hundred neurons and a human brain has tens of billions. The study does not claim equivalent brains, or equivalent experience, awake or anesthetized.
Does it explain consciousness?
No. It is an association across species, not proof of a universal cause of anesthesia. It also does not show what consciousness is or whether a worm has any. What it offers is a cross-species marker that could help test theories of how anesthetics work, and it suggests the underlying mechanism has been conserved through evolution.
