Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →I prefer DVDs for three practical reasons: I can keep a copy, play it without a live internet connection, and revisit or lend it rather than treating it as a one-time stream. Those advantages matter most when I know I want a particular film again. Streaming is still easier for instant access and broad catalogs, and a DVD is standard-definition media—not a guaranteed picture-quality upgrade.
1. I can keep a copy and build a collection
A DVD is a physical copy I can put on a shelf and find again, whether or not a streaming service carries the title later. For me, that sense of control is the main appeal: my collection reflects the films I actually want to keep, rather than a catalog I access through a subscription or service.
That preference is personal, not a sign that physical media is still the dominant way to watch. The FCC reported that U.S. retail spending on DVD and Blu-ray purchases and rentals fell from $11.8 billion in 2012 to $1.5 billion in 2023. Those figures combine DVD and Blu-ray and include rentals, not DVD sales alone. Even so, physical media remains in use: in a May 2024 Consumer Reports survey of 2,022 U.S. adults, 49% said they had used DVDs or Blu-rays at home in the prior year. That is self-reported use, not an ownership rate.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. I can watch without a live streaming connection
Once I have a DVD and a compatible player, playback does not depend on a live connection to a streaming service. That is useful when the internet is unavailable, unreliable, or simply not the way I want to access a film. It also avoids streaming-service catalog changes interrupting access to a title I own.
This is not the same as saying every stream needs a fast, uninterrupted connection: streaming requirements vary with the service, device, and viewing conditions. Digital video does rely on connected equipment and data transmission, while a DVD relies on the disc and player. If I travel, I still need to bring both the disc and compatible playback equipment; a physical copy is not automatically more convenient than a stream.

For context, ADEME’s French lifecycle assessment describes digital viewing as relying on connected equipment and data transmission, and notes that energy intensity can differ between mobile viewing and fixed Wi-Fi in the scenarios it assessed. That is a scenario-specific observation, not a universal verdict on streaming. ADEME’s 17 November 2022 summary says, in translation, that the study cannot generally conclude that digital cultural services are better than their physical alternatives.
3. A disc can earn its place through repeat viewing or sharing
If I expect to rewatch a film, a disc can be useful well beyond the first viewing. Depending on the disc and local rules, I may also be able to lend it or resell it. Those possibilities make a DVD more attractive to me for a favorite film than for something I will watch once and forget.

Whether a disc is worthwhile depends on how it is used. ADEME’s assessment cautions against buying a DVD for a single viewing as an environmentally pertinent choice, while recognizing that reuse over time can matter. An older 2014 U.S. lifecycle study by Shehabi, Walker, and Masanet—based on 2011 viewing estimates—also found that the comparison could vary with the viewing method and assumptions; driving to obtain a disc increased the disc scenario’s impact. Neither study supports a blanket claim that DVDs are greener than streaming, or the reverse. Your viewing frequency, access method, equipment, and travel all affect the comparison.

When I choose a DVD—and what I give up
I choose a DVD when I want to keep a particular film, expect to revisit it, or value playback that does not depend on a live stream. I choose streaming when convenience, immediate access, or browsing a broad catalog matters more. Neither format wins for every viewer.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Picture quality: DVDs are standard definition. A particular streaming version may look better, but quality depends on the title, release, stream, display, and connection. The available evidence here does not establish a controlled comparison of specific DVD editions with specific streaming versions.
- Equipment and space: A DVD requires a working compatible player and somewhere to store discs. If you are considering a copy, check the edition, condition, and player compatibility; a player is only an additional purchase if you do not already have one.
- Selection and access: Streaming is usually simpler for immediate access and broad catalogs. A disc gives you a physical copy, but you first need to find and obtain the title.
- Sharing: A physical disc can be lent or resold, subject to applicable rules and practical limits. Streaming access is tied to a service and its terms rather than a disc you can hand to someone.
