1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTheCUBE’s 2026 Supermicro Open Storage Summit interviews point to three connected lessons for AI teams: storage tiers shape inference economics, production systems must fit specific workloads and operating constraints, and useful AI depends on governing and preparing data throughout its lifecycle. These are interviewees’ and vendors’ explanations—not independent performance or cost benchmarks.
1. Storage tiering is part of inference economics
AI infrastructure has to serve data that is immediately active while also accommodating much larger collections that are accessed less often. Treating every byte as a candidate for all-flash storage can be impractical at scale; the design question is which data needs which level of performance, and when.
Scality senior vice president of AI and alliance partnerships Greg DiFraia described customers managing tens or hundreds of petabytes, or even exabytes, and said that scale cannot all live on flash. Those figures are his examples of customer scale, not an independently measured industry statistic. The implication is to distinguish performance-sensitive data from capacity-oriented data rather than assume a single medium is right for every stage.
Separate active data from capacity data
One architecture example on Supermicro’s summit page pairs an all-flash high-performance parallel file system with an object-storage tier based primarily on hard disk drives (HDDs). Supermicro presents the combination as a way to balance performance and total cost of ownership, but provides no comparative cost figures or benchmark proving how much it saves.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That division is useful as a planning model, not a universal configuration: place data on a fast tier when the workload requires it, and consider a higher-capacity tier for data whose access pattern permits it. The right boundary depends on the application’s latency needs, data movement, and operational design.
Account for inference KV cache
Inference adds another consideration: the key-value (KV) cache, which holds context used during generation. As agent contexts grow, a KV cache can exceed available GPU memory, making additional storage tiers relevant—but a slower tier may change retrieval speed. VAST Data director of AI architecture Anat Heilper explained the potential benefit this way: “When you have very high KV cache hit rates, we both save on compute and reduce the latency significantly.” Her statement is an explanation of the effect of high hit rates, not a quantified guarantee for a particular system.

For an architecture decision, compare the performance required by active context with the capacity available in GPU memory and any additional tier under consideration. The summit coverage does not report an independent test establishing a particular latency, utilization, or savings outcome.
2. Production AI requires workload-specific systems and operating controls
Infrastructure requirements follow from the decisions a workload must support. In one example, DDN executive Moiz Kohari discussed financial-services risk calculations and capital availability, describing how the speed of data movement can affect those calculations. The large-institution and capital-lockup figures in his example are hypothetical illustrations from the interview, not verified statistics about named firms.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That example underscores why teams should define workload requirements before selecting a configuration: data movement, time sensitivity, scale, and the consequences of delay can differ substantially between use cases.
Pre-validated configurations can reduce integration work
Supermicro executive Vince Chen described working with partners to offer vertically integrated, pre-validated system configurations in several sizes, with the aim of reducing the complexity of building AI infrastructure. This is the vendor’s description of its approach; it does not establish that a specific configuration will meet an organization’s requirements. Buyers still need to validate workload fit, integration, and operating needs.

Plan for the work after proof of concept
The summit agenda’s “Moving AI from POC to Production” framing spans more than hardware. Its production hurdles include testing and integration, cost and token economics, scalable infrastructure, data readiness, access and governance, and user onboarding. Nutanix executive Ruhi Sehgal also raised the challenge of supporting more users within infrastructure limits.
Rob Strechay of theCUBE Research summarized the shift: “The organizations succeeding today are focusing less on models and more on operationalization,”. In practical terms, an evaluation should include the full path from preparing and accessing data through serving users and managing costs—not just whether a model runs in a proof of concept.

3. Data preparation, control, and lifecycle are foundational
AI systems can only make use of data that teams can find, prepare, govern, and deliver to the workload. The unstructured-data interviews emphasize that this work extends beyond archiving and backup: it includes unifying data and automating its movement as its use changes.
Hammerspace chief marketing officer Molly Presley described the challenge as follows: “The idea of unifying and then really efficiently automating the movement of it are big pieces of this unstructured data management for AI.” Cloudian vice president of worldwide solution architects Peter Sjoberg emphasized control and protection: “We see a key goal to put that unstructured data under management so that it is protected, it is safe and secure,”. These are interview participants’ perspectives on data management priorities.
Understand the roles in the described architecture
The related interview described a vendor architecture in which Supermicro systems provide storage hardware; Hammerspace provides a global unified namespace and orchestration among tiers; Cloudian provides S3 object storage; and Seagate hard drives hold data later in its lifecycle. This account comes from participants in sponsored event coverage, not a neutral product comparison or a finding that the products are interchangeable.
The broader lesson is to make responsibilities explicit in a design: which component supplies storage capacity, which controls namespace and movement, how data is exposed to workloads, and how access and protection are managed as data moves between uses.
What the summit coverage establishes—and what it does not
Supermicro describes its seventh annual Open Storage Summit as a virtual event with 12 sessions and 38 industry leaders from 21 companies; those participation figures are reported by the event organizer. The sessions became available on demand starting August 11, 2026. The official agenda includes “Optimizing AI Inference Performance and Cost with Multi-Tier Storage.”
TheCUBE’s coverage identifies it as a paid media partner for the summit and says Supermicro and other sponsors did not have editorial control. Even with that disclosure, the architecture descriptions and benefits above remain attributable to the speakers and vendors. The coverage does not supply independent storage-performance, latency, utilization, or cost benchmarks, so it cannot establish a universal best tiering design or a specific return on investment.
