Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The real idea is narrower and more useful. An eFPGA is a block of programmable logic that a chip team licenses as intellectual property and builds into an ASIC or SoC. After the chip is manufactured, the logic inside that block can be reconfigured. Everything outside it stays fixed.
This guide explains how that works, what the vendor claims, and where those claims stop being evidence. The main source is a March 2025 article written by Menta and listed by EE Times as sponsored content, plus Menta’s own website. Neither offers independent benchmarks, so every performance or benefit claim below is attributed to the vendor.
What an eFPGA is, in plain terms
In a conventional ASIC, most functionality is fixed during chip design. If a standard changes or a bug appears in a hard-wired block after tape-out, the usual fix is a new silicon revision. An eFPGA adds a region of the chip whose logic is set by a configuration bitstream rather than by the mask. Teams can load a new configuration to complete, fix or alter functions implemented in that region.
This is not a consumer FPGA board and not a separate FPGA chip sitting next to your ASIC. It is IP that sits inside your die, connected to the rest of the SoC through the interfaces you design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat it can and cannot change after fabrication
- Can change: logic mapped into the eFPGA fabric, within its available logic, memory and DSP resources.
- Cannot change: the rest of the chip, such as fixed CPUs, analog blocks, I/O and anything outside the fabric. Capacity is also fixed when the chip is made. The sources describe the concept at a high level and give no universal figure for how much reconfigurable capacity a design should include.
So “unlimited” does not describe the hardware. The flexibility is bounded by the fabric size you chose and by how well the surrounding system exposes it.

What Menta says the benefits are
Menta says eFPGA lets teams:
- Address requirements that evolve after the design is frozen.
- Fix bugs or change features after tape-out.
- Shorten time to market.
- Serve several market variants with one device.
These are described as design possibilities. The source does not say how often they occur or show that eFPGA beats a respin, a separate FPGA or a software workaround in any given project.
Workloads the vendor names
- Cryptography and security functions
- Image and video processing
- Motor control
- AI inference
- Highly parallel algorithms, and custom instructions attached to processors such as RISC-V
These are applications the vendor identifies, not independently demonstrated customer results. The general logic is that parallel or timing-sensitive tasks can suit programmable hardware better than a general-purpose CPU. Menta’s own wording is that “with Menta’s flexible soft IP offering, you can easily tune this IP to perfectly match the needs of your specific algorithms.” That is promotional language.

Security claims need context
Menta cites crypto agility (swapping algorithms as standards change) and obfuscation among the uses. It also discusses redundant processing and keeping data or memory separate from CPU systems. None of this shows that an eFPGA makes a chip secure by itself. The outcome depends on implementation, threat model, verification and the rest of the system.

- Customizable fabric: customers can select logic, memory and DSP resources.
- Soft-IP implementation: Menta says it is built from standard cells. Its site describes delivery as soft RTL or as hard GDSII.
- Toolchain: Origami Programmer, which Menta says covers synthesis, place and route, static timing analysis and bitstream generation for its architecture.
- Test coverage: Menta states more than 99.7% stuck-at and 95% at-speed coverage for its configuration memory (2025, vendor-stated). No independent report or methodology was supplied, so treat the figures as a datasheet-style claim to verify.
Soft versus hard eFPGA IP
Menta argues that soft IP gives more control over resources and process-node implementation, can be delivered more quickly, and that hard IP may be less flexible. That is a vendor comparison, not a benchmark. When you assess any eFPGA supplier, compare along these axes:

When programmable logic belongs inside a custom chip
Questions worth answering before committing silicon area to it:
Rank #4
- The best way to get started with FPGAs: Using a simple board with projects that build on eachother, now anyone can get started with FPGA development!
- Fun peripherals available: With 4 LEDs, 4 push-buttons, 7-segment display, USB connector, a VGA connector, and a PMOD (for expansion) you can have dozens of fun projects available to you out of the box!
- Works with Verilog and VHDL: No matter which programming language you want to get started with, the Go Board will work for you!
- No extra device required: Simply plug the Go Board into a USB port and go! Getting started with FPGAs has never been easier.
- Works with all operating systems: Windows, Mac, Linux
- Which functions are likely to change after tape-out (standards, algorithms, customer-specific features), and which are stable enough to harden?
- Would a fixed accelerator, a firmware update or a software-programmable core meet the same need at lower area and power?
- How many market variants could share this die if part of it were configurable?
- Can your team run the eFPGA toolflow, including timing closure and bitstream management, over the product’s life?
- Where will the bitstream be stored and protected, and how is it loaded securely?
If the answers show few changing functions, a fixed block is usually simpler. The case for eFPGA is strongest where uncertainty is real and a respin would be costly.

Menta’s website describes a Starter Pack: two days of training, either at the customer’s site or at Menta’s office in Sophia-Antipolis, France. Participants receive six weeks of Origami Programmer access, sample RTL designs and dedicated field-applications-engineer support. Availability and terms can change, so confirm them with Menta directly.

Ecosystem names and how to read them
Menta’s article mentions organizations including Trusted Semiconductor Solutions, imec, Siemens, Andes Technology, Codasip, Synopsys, SecureIC, Qualcomm/Tiempo and PQSecure. Their roles are described only by Menta and not independently verified here. Do not read the list as current endorsement or a formal partnership; check with each organization.
The Bottom Line
eFPGA gives a custom chip a configurable region, not unlimited flexibility. Treat Menta’s performance, security, schedule and test-coverage claims as vendor statements, and ask for design-specific data on area, power, timing and tool support before committing.
