What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
PCB layout replication is a recovery task, not a one-click conversion. Start with the most complete authorized source available—ideally the original schematic and native board files—and use Gerbers or a physical board only with clear limits. Gerber files can help recover copper geometry, but they do not by themselves restore the original schematic, component intent, or complete editable project.
What can you recover from the files you have?
The reconstruction route depends on what survived. Native EDA files preserve more design structure than fabrication artwork; a physical board may provide clues that neither file set contains. In every case, separate confirmed facts from inferences and unknowns.
| Available source | What it can provide | What remains uncertain or missing |
|---|---|---|
| Native EDA project and board files | Editable board data, and potentially project structure and design information, depending on the files and importer. | Compatibility with the source format and version; imported data may omit information or be limited to the board. |
| Gerber and drill files | Layer artwork and hole locations that can guide reconstruction of copper geometry. | Original schematic, component identities and intent, net assignments, design rules, and the complete native project are not inherently restored by converting artwork. |
| Physical board | Visible component markings, dimensions, connector locations, and accessible surface features; continuity testing can provide additional evidence. | Internal copper on a multilayer board may not be directly visible, and photos alone cannot establish every connection. |
Can I get a schematic and board layout from Gerber files if I only have those?
You can use Gerbers to reconstruct or convert layer geometry, but Gerbers alone do not establish the original schematic or the complete design intent. KiCad’s Gerber Viewer can export Gerbers to an editable board representation, but KiCad explicitly cautions that “Converting to gerbers will not create a normal KiCad PCB design, it will be editable representation of the copper from the gerber.” KiCad Gerber Viewer
That distinction matters: copper artwork is not the same as a fully defined PCB project. Use a schematic, netlist, BOM, fabrication drawings, component markings, drill data, board measurements, or a physical sample as separate evidence where available. Do not silently assign unknown nets or footprints just because a shape appears plausible.

When native EDA files are available
Prefer the original schematic and native board files. If the project is in another EDA format, check whether your software imports that exact format and version, and determine what the importer actually transfers. KiCad’s 2026 importer announcement describes support for Allegro, PADS, and gEDA with format-specific boundaries. For example, the announcement says the Allegro importer reads `.brd` versions 16–23 and is board-only; it also describes PCB import information carried by PADS and gEDA. KiCad Development Team’s 2026 importer announcement
After import, inspect the board rather than assuming it is a complete or verified project. Confirm the outline, layer stack, footprints, holes, and connectivity against the original schematic or other references.

When Gerbers and drill data are available
Load the available layers in a Gerber viewer and compare them before conversion. Map each layer deliberately, preserve physical dimensions, and use the drill files to check hole locations and sizes. If you export copper artwork to an editable representation, treat it as starting geometry: reconstruct or verify footprints, component identities, net assignments, and design intent from other evidence.
When only a physical board is available
Record dimensions, component sides, connector positions, polarity marks, visible trace paths, and component markings. A continuity meter can help test connections on an accessible sample, but it does not reveal every internal route or establish the original schematic. Specialized imaging may be needed for multilayer boards: a 2025 academic paper by Carson Sobolewski, David S. Koblah, and Domenic Forte describes an X-ray CT annotation method for vias, pads, and traces. The paper reports a demonstration on “three distinct layers” of a sample multilayer PCB; that is a limited research example, not a general accuracy guarantee or evidence that ordinary photography can recover hidden layers. Work through the reconstruction in a controlled order
- Confirm authorization and purpose. Establish that you are authorized to inspect and reproduce the board, and record whether the goal is repair, legacy replacement, interoperability, education, or another legitimate need. Permission requirements can depend on rights, contracts, confidentiality, and jurisdiction; the available technical sources do not determine the legal status of a particular board.
- Inventory the evidence. Search first for the native EDA project and board files, then schematic, netlist, BOM, Gerber layer set, drill files, fabrication drawings, photos, physical sample, and working components. Note board dimensions, layer count, component sides, connectors, polarity, and anything unavailable.
- Label certainty. Mark each design detail as confirmed, inferred, or unknown. Keep inferred nets, footprints, layer assignments, and dimensions visible in your working notes rather than presenting them as established facts.
- Set up the board structure. Define the board outline, copper layer stack, and physical dimensions in the EDA tool. Map source layers to design layers and preserve the original scale.
- Rebuild and cross-check details. Verify footprints, drill sizes, pads, trace widths, clearances, net assignments, and layer transitions. Compare front and back views; use the schematic or netlist as electrical reference where available. If neither exists, state the uncertainty and test continuity on a physical sample where appropriate.
- Run design checks before fabrication. Use the EDA tool’s design-rule checks (DRC), review the results, and inspect a 3D view when it helps confirm mechanical fit. KiCad documents DRC, schematic-to-board synchronization, and fabrication outputs including Gerber and IPC-2581. KiCad 9 PCB Editor manual
Compare sources by completeness and confidence
When you have more than one possible route, evaluate what each can actually establish rather than assuming all sources are interchangeable.
- Data completeness: Does the source include the schematic and native board data, or only fabrication geometry?
- Connectivity evidence: Is there a schematic or netlist to verify which pads and tracks belong to each net?
- Layer access: How many copper layers are present, and can internal layers be inspected from the files or physical sample?
- Compatibility: Does the importer support the exact source EDA format and version, and what does it omit?
- Verification confidence: Can geometry and connectivity be checked against a sample, drawings, schematic, netlist, or other independent reference?
- Specialized effort: Does the board require imaging beyond accessible visual inspection? The cited CT work is a research technique, not a general consumer-equipment recommendation.
- Time and cost: These vary with source quality, board complexity, layer count, and verification needs; no general prices or turnaround estimates are established here.
Prepare and verify the fabrication handoff
Fabrication data is a set of digital files describing patterned board layers, not simply a picture of the board. Confirm the receiving fabricator’s accepted formats, required layers, and stack-up requirements rather than assuming one export package suits every shop. KiCad can export fabrication outputs including Gerber and IPC-2581, but the correct deliverables depend on the manufacturer’s requirements. Ucamco, The Gerber Guide (2016)

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Where available, include a netlist as an additional connectivity check. Karel Tavernier’s 2016 Ucamco guide describes using an IPC-D-356A netlist to extend checking across the CAD-to-fabrication transfer. A netlist supplements, rather than replaces, review of the exported files and the reconstructed design.
Choose design standards according to the board’s type and requirements. IPC lists standards for categories including generic, rigid, HDI, and RF/microwave boards; that listing does not establish that an unknown legacy design conforms to any particular standard. IPC standards listing

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I create a KiCad design, including all the components, from a PDF?
A PDF can provide visual or dimensional evidence, but it does not necessarily contain editable component, net, or project data. Use it alongside native files, schematic or netlist data, drill information, and measurements; treat details that cannot be confirmed as unknown rather than reconstructing them by guesswork.
