A secure, stable Linux system starts with a release that is still supported and receives updates. From there, check what protections are enabled on that particular release, choose a baseline that matches your distribution and version, and add hardening in tested, reversible steps. The right configuration depends on whether you run a desktop, server, or regulated workload; no single distribution or checklist is best for every situation.

What does your system need to protect?

Before choosing a release or changing settings, identify what the system does and what could go wrong. A personal desktop, an internet-facing server, and a system handling regulated data have different exposure, availability, and compliance needs. Hardening that is sensible for one may break software or create unnecessary work on another.

Write down the operational requirements

  • List the services, applications, and hardware the system must support.
  • Identify likely threats, such as unauthorized physical access, exposed network services, or compromised accounts.
  • Decide how much downtime is acceptable for updates and recovery.
  • Note any compliance framework or audit requirement that applies.

These answers determine which controls matter and how cautiously to deploy them. Canonical cautions that “Hardening always involves a tradeoff with usability and performance.” Treat each change as something to validate against the workload, not as an automatic improvement.

How do you choose a supportable Linux release?

Prefer a release with a published maintenance lifecycle that fits the period you expect to run it. Support is a security control: when fixes stop arriving for your installed system, newly discovered issues may remain unpatched unless you migrate or obtain applicable extended maintenance.

Check what the support promise covers

Canonical says each Ubuntu LTS release receives five years of standard security and maintenance updates for the main operating system. Canonical also describes Ubuntu Pro as extending maintenance for supported operating-system and application packages up to 15 years. These are Canonical’s published terms, checked on October 7, 2026; they do not mean every package, repository, installation, or deployment automatically receives the same coverage. Confirm the release, package scope, and any subscription eligibility that applies to your system in Canonical’s Ubuntu Security information.

Compare releases on more than age

For any distribution, verify the exact release’s end-of-support date, covered repositories and packages, and whether longer maintenance requires a subscription. Then check compatibility with the software and hardware you need. A newer release is not automatically the best operational choice if essential workloads are not ready for it; an older release is not a sound long-term choice merely because it currently works.

The available evidence supports Ubuntu as a well-documented example and confirms that CIS lists benchmarks for Ubuntu and Debian releases. It does not support ranking Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or other distributions as universally most secure. Compare the specific release and its support terms rather than relying on a general-purpose ranking.

Which built-in security controls should you verify?

Do not assume a feature is present, enabled, or configured the same way across releases. Canonical’s security overview describes protections and capabilities by Ubuntu release, including AppArmor, Secure Boot, encryption options, and update features. Check the documentation for the exact release and architecture you intend to deploy before treating a control as available or active.

Updates and access control

Keep security updates flowing through a process suitable for the system. For a desktop, that may mean applying updates promptly and restarting when required. For a service, plan a maintenance window, verify updates in a representative environment where practical, and confirm the service recovers as expected. Do not confuse an update mechanism being available with updates actually being installed.

Check whether a mandatory access control system such as AppArmor is available and active for the applications you run. Such controls can restrict what a process may access, but profiles and application behavior matter; changing enforcement without understanding the effect can interrupt a workload.

Secure Boot and encryption

Secure Boot is a boot-integrity control: it helps validate signed components in the boot chain. Canonical documents signed boot components and notes that key handling or disabling validation can change the security boundary. It is not a complete defense against a compromised running system, stolen credentials, or every form of physical access. Verify its state and configuration for the chosen hardware and release.

Evaluate encryption options against the data and access risks in your environment. Encryption can help protect data at rest, but its usefulness depends on key handling and on how the system is unlocked and recovered. Canonical’s release-specific overview is the appropriate place to verify which options are documented for a given Ubuntu release and architecture.

How should you establish a hardening baseline?

Use a baseline that matches the installed distribution and release. The CIS Benchmarks catalog lists, as checked on October 7, 2026, Ubuntu Linux 26.04 LTS benchmark version 1.0.0, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS benchmark version 2.0.0, and Debian Linux 13 benchmark version 1.1.0. These are catalog version identifiers, not measures of security outcomes. Check the catalog for the current edition and confirm it applies to your exact system before using it.

Audit first, then remediate

  1. Record the target. Document the distribution, release, architecture, installed roles, and relevant services.
  2. Select the matching baseline. Choose the benchmark for that distribution and release rather than applying a generic Linux checklist.
  3. Assess the current configuration. Identify which recommendations already pass, which fail, and which do not fit the workload.
  4. Review each proposed change. Check its effect on required applications, access, networking, and recovery before applying it.
  5. Stage the changes. Test remediations on a representative system or in a controlled maintenance window, then verify both the security setting and the service behavior.
  6. Keep an audit trail. Record accepted exceptions, configuration changes, and the results of follow-up checks so later administrators can understand the intended state.

A benchmark is a structured baseline, not a substitute for a threat model or a guarantee of security. Blindly applying every recommendation can create outages or make a system harder to operate.

When do Ubuntu Security Guide and Ubuntu Pro matter?

For Ubuntu LTS environments that need CIS auditing or a compliance workflow, Canonical documents Ubuntu Security Guide (USG) as an option. Canonical describes Ubuntu Pro as its subscription offering for compliance-oriented capabilities, including automated CIS and DISA STIG hardening. Check current eligibility, supported releases, package coverage, and subscription scope before relying on those capabilities; availability should not be assumed for every installation.

These tools are most relevant when an organization needs repeatable assessment, compliance evidence, or managed hardening workflows. They are not prerequisites for every Linux user, and using automation does not remove the need to review changes against the workload.

How do you harden without making the system fragile?

Make changes in small batches and preserve a practical route back to a working configuration. Before altering a control that could affect boot, remote access, authentication, or a critical service, ensure you have an appropriate recovery method and know how to use it.

  • Apply one coherent set of changes at a time so failures are easier to isolate.
  • Validate critical application and service behavior after each batch, not only whether a benchmark item passes.
  • Keep administrative access and recovery procedures available while testing access-control or boot changes.
  • Document exceptions where a recommendation conflicts with an operational requirement, and revisit them if the workload changes.
  • Schedule updates and baseline reviews so they continue after the initial setup.

For systems where uptime matters, test the update and recovery process before a real incident. A secure configuration that cannot be maintained or restored is not a stable operating plan.

What should you revisit over time?

Security and support status change as releases, package coverage, benchmark editions, and organizational requirements change. Recheck these items after a distribution upgrade, a major workload change, or a policy change:

  • Whether the release remains within its support window and whether the packages you rely on are covered.
  • Whether updates are still arriving and being applied through the system’s maintenance process.
  • Whether documented security defaults or the state of controls such as AppArmor, Secure Boot, and encryption have changed for the release or hardware.
  • Whether the CIS benchmark edition still matches the installed release and current requirements.
  • Whether hardening exceptions remain necessary and whether the recovery process still works.
