What is the Las Playas Intaglio?
It is a large fish-shaped design made by scraping away the surface of the ground, a type of geoglyph known as an intaglio. The site is in the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona, west of Ajo.
Arizona Public Media describes the location as a Tohono O’odham sacred site and part of ancestral homelands. The Washington Post also quoted Hia-ced O’odham elder Lorraine Marquez Eiler describing the harm of damage to ancestral places: “If someone came to Washington and started destroying all the different sites that people in the United States revere, it’s the same thing for us.” These are attributed descriptions and remarks; the reporting cited here does not include a direct statement from the Tohono O’odham Nation.
How old is the geoglyph?
A September 2026 release from the Center for Biological Diversity says three samples support a conservative age estimate of 6,500–7,300 years. Arizona Public Media summarized the result as at least 6,500 years old. Before this new estimate, coverage described the site as thought to be about 1,000 years old.

The Center’s release says researchers used varnish microlamination dating on stones collected from the intaglio in 1979. The dating summary notes that the varnish formed after the earthwork, meaning the geoglyph itself could be older than the estimated range. The estimate is reported by the organization and local media; it should not be treated as an exact construction date.
Is it older than the pyramids and Stonehenge?
By the reported estimate, it is. The Center for Biological Diversity and Arizona Public Media compare the geoglyph’s age with the first Egyptian pyramid and Stonehenge’s first construction: roughly 2,000 years earlier than Egypt’s first pyramid and about 1,500 years earlier than Stonehenge. These are approximate comparisons based on the reported age range, not precise dates for either monument.

What part of the geoglyph was damaged?
The Washington Post reported that a border-wall contractor disturbed part of the fish formation on April 23, 2026. Arizona Public Media described a 50-foot swath through the geoglyph; that figure is a reported measure, not an independently verified measurement here.
CBP spokesperson John Mennell told The Washington Post: “On April 23, 2026, a border wall contractor inadvertently disturbed a cultural site known as Las Playas Intaglio, located west of Ajo, Arizona along the border,” and said, “The remaining portion of the site has been secured and will be protected in place.” That statement records the agency’s position at the time of the report. The sources cited here do not establish the site’s later physical condition, whether repairs or remediation occurred, or the outcome of any consultation.

Russ McSpadden, a Southwest conservation advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity, told Arizona Public Media: “This discovery makes an already devastating loss even more profound. It’s a cultural and historical atrocity.”
