Claude for Google Workspace launched in public beta on October 6, 2026, for paid Claude plans. It includes two different ways to work: a sidebar add-on that assists with the Google file you already have open, and separate Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors that let you start in Claude and create or edit files accessible through your Google account.
What launched—and how the two workflows differ
Anthropic announced a Google Workspace sidebar add-on and separate Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors. Both are described as beta experiences, but they start in different places and have different file scopes.
| Workflow | Where you start | File scope |
|---|---|---|
| Claude sidebar add-on | An open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file | The file where the add-on is open. The sidebar cannot browse Drive to open, create, or copy other files. |
| Google Workspace connectors | A conversation in Claude | Google files available under your existing Google sharing permissions. Team and Enterprise organizations require an owner or primary owner to enable the connectors. |
Anthropic describes the sidebar this way: “With the add-on, Claude opens in a sidebar next to your file, so you don’t need to switch between apps or browser tabs when you work.” The sidebar can use the open file—and selected text, cells, or slides—as context and can make changes in place. The connectors instead let you ask Claude to create or edit Google files from a Claude conversation.
What Claude can do in each app
Google Docs
Claude can draft, rewrite, restructure, summarize, and restyle document content. It can make in-place edits, while larger rewrites can appear as suggestion cards. Its edits are not the same as handling Google Docs’ existing suggestions: the add-on cannot accept or reject those suggestions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Google Sheets
Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, add tabs, and clean or analyze data. Anthropic says some data-cleaning or join work can use Python before the results are written back to the sheet. That does not extend to Connected Sheets tabs backed by live BigQuery data, which the add-on cannot read or edit.
Google Slides
Claude can build slides using a deck’s layouts and themes, tighten or restyle slides, and check for overlapping or off-slide elements. New charts are inserted as images rather than linked Sheets charts; the add-on also cannot refresh an existing linked chart.

How to install Claude in Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic says one Marketplace installation covers all three Google apps. You need access to a paid Claude plan, and your Workspace administrator may need to allow or deploy the app if Marketplace installation is restricted.
- Install the Claude app from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
- Open a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file.
- In the file’s menu, choose Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
A Google Workspace super administrator can install the add-on for the organization or selected groups or organizational units. If your organization blocks Marketplace apps, ask an administrator to allowlist or install Claude. The Marketplace listing identifies Anthropic as the publisher and was updated October 5, 2026; its “Paid” label does not, by itself, explain Claude plan eligibility or pricing. Anthropic’s announcement says the add-on is in public beta on all paid Claude plans.

Control whether Claude applies edits
The default Ask before edits mode pauses for your approval before applying edits. Choose Accept all edits if you want ordinary edits applied without stopping for approval. Some actions still require approval even in that mode.
Limits to know before starting a task
- Keep the sidebar open: it must remain open while Claude works on a task.
- Allow for operation limits: a single operation can run for up to six minutes before Google stops it. Split larger jobs into stages.
- Use a supported browser: Anthropic lists Chrome, Edge, and Safari as supported for this beta; Firefox is not supported.
- Docs comments are out of scope: Claude cannot read, reply to, or resolve comments, or accept or reject existing suggestions.
- Some Sheets automation is unavailable: Claude cannot create triggers, custom menus, or scheduled refreshes, and cannot read or edit Connected Sheets tabs backed by live BigQuery data.
- Slides chart links are limited: new charts are images, and existing linked charts cannot be refreshed by the add-on.
- The add-on is not a Drive file manager: it cannot open, create, or copy other files in Drive, or export the open file as a PDF or download.
Permissions, privacy, and organizational controls
Anthropic says the extension requests permission to display third-party web content in Google applications and to view or manage the specific documents, spreadsheets, or presentations where it is installed. According to Anthropic, Google enforces the one-open-file scope; the extension does not request general access to Drive, Gmail, or Calendar.

Anthropic says content from the open file, messages, and attachments is sent to Claude to generate a response, and that this content is not used to train its models. Anthropic says Team and Enterprise use is governed by its Commercial Terms and Data Processing Addendum; Pro and Max use is governed by its Consumer Terms and Privacy Policy. Its guide describes deletion within 30 days, with exceptions, and says the extension does not inherit custom organizational retention settings. Review the current Anthropic guide and applicable terms for details relevant to your account.
Workspace administrators control whether the app can be installed or used. Claude organization administrators control which connectors, skills, and models members can access. Anthropic’s guide says third-party inference, Zero Data Retention, and HIPAA-ready use are not supported for this beta; do not treat the extension as suitable for protected health information.
