The ASUS Googlebook 14 (model CX9406CAA) is a very light, premium 14-inch laptop. The software on it, Googlebook OS, is new, and it has not yet proved it can run the apps people rely on. That is the takeaway from MobileSyrup’s early hands-on, written by Jonathan Lamont on October 5, 2026. He had the laptop only long enough to set it up and explore the OS, so everything below is a first impression, not a verdict.
What the ASUS Googlebook 14 is
ASUS lists the laptop as the Googlebook 14, model CX9406CAA, running Googlebook OS. The US specification page describes this configuration:
| Component | ASUS-listed spec (US page) |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core Ultra 5 325, with Intel AI Boost NPU rated up to 47 TOPS |
| Graphics | Intel Graphics |
| Display | 14-inch OLED touchscreen |
| Memory | 16 GB LPDDR5X, onboard |
| Storage | 256 GB M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe |
| Ports | Two Thunderbolt 4 (USB4, display support), two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, 3.5 mm audio jack |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 |
| Battery | 70 Wh (a capacity rating, not a runtime test) |
| Weight | Starting at 0.99 kg (2.18 lb) |
MobileSyrup describes a wider range for the Canadian launch: a 3K 120 Hz OLED panel, Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7 Series 3 chips, up to 16 GB of RAM and up to a 512 GB SSD. ASUS’s US page shows only one configuration, and ASUS notes that specifications, availability and configurations vary by model and market. Check the exact SKU you are buying instead of assuming every unit matches one list.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Chassis: The nano-ceramic magnesium-aluminum body felt textured without being overly grippy.
- Weight: At 0.99 kg (2.18 lb), it felt very thin and light.
- Screen, speakers and touchpad: Lamont praised the OLED touchscreen, the six-speaker audio and the six-sensor haptic touchpad after initial use.
No independent battery-runtime figures or benchmarks were available in the sources behind this piece, so the 70 Wh capacity and the 47 TOPS NPU rating are manufacturer numbers only.

On security, Google says the platform shares ChromeOS’s architecture, including a Titan hardware root of trust and on-device malware detection. It adds that a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor supports the isolated Linux environment. Google also promises regular feature drops and updates for up to 10 years. Its own wording is: “Googlebook is built on a shared Android foundation, so your phone and laptop work seamlessly together.” These are Google’s claims, and the MobileSyrup hands-on did not verify them.
Software: what went wrong in the first session
Lamont says the interface looks and feels like ChromeOS. Two problems stood out.

Linux Firefox would not install
He could install the Android version of Firefox. Despite repeated attempts, he could not get the Linux desktop version running. He allows that he may have missed something, since it was his first time on Googlebook OS. Treat this as one person’s early experience, not proof that Linux apps fail on the platform.
App mirroring was rough
Mirroring phone apps to the laptop showed text-rendering problems in most of the apps he tried. It also had enough latency to make the feature unappealing to him. The Google apps he tried looked fine. The sample was small, and software updates may change the result.

His conclusion is that the software has to deliver on its connected features if it is going to give people a reason to choose this system over macOS or Windows. He also says his impressions may change with more testing. The article mentions that another publication reported bootloader unlocking as a possibility, but that is not an established or supported route, so it is not a fallback to plan around.

Who should consider it, and who should wait
- Good fit: Android phone users who want a light, high-quality laptop and are happy with Chrome, web apps and Android apps.
- Wait for more proof: anyone who needs a specific desktop Linux app or a particular desktop browser, or who plans to lean on phone-app mirroring. Check those exact apps first.
- Organizations and schools: Google’s administrator guidance says: “The 2026 Googlebook launch is designed specifically for personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management.” Google says comprehensive management features are planned to start rolling out in the second half of 2027. It also says existing ChromeOS devices keep getting support through their supported lifetimes, and that many newer Chromebooks may be eligible to transition, with eligibility details still to come.
The hardware is the safer part of this purchase. The software is the part to watch, and a longer MobileSyrup review is planned, so these first thoughts may change.
