The promise is better-informed control of a complex growing process—not a substitute for reliable sensors, biological knowledge, or process engineering.
Why growing microalgae takes careful control
Microalgae use photosynthesis to convert light and carbon dioxide into organic compounds. That makes them candidates for products such as food ingredients, animal feed, pigments, and renewable fuels. To grow them, operators must manage several conditions at once, including light, temperature, pH, oxygen, and carbon dioxide supply.
Those variables interact. Too little light can limit photosynthesis, while too much can cause photoinhibition. As a culture grows denser, cells shade one another. Aeration can simultaneously affect carbon dioxide delivery, oxygen removal, and pH. That makes simple adjustments to one variable at a time an imperfect way to manage a culture.
How AI can assist cultivation
Finding patterns in sensor data
Sensors can continually record conditions such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, light, and carbon dioxide. Machine-learning models can analyze combinations of readings to estimate growth, identify patterns associated with culture stress, and help operators decide when to adjust conditions.

Image analysis is also being studied as a way to estimate biomass or culture density, potentially reducing reliance on manual sampling alone. Combining sensor and image data may help researchers spot changes that merit attention, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed early-warning system.
Supporting control decisions
A model can help predict how a culture may respond to an operating change, while a control system can use measurements to adjust a process variable. The benefit depends on the quality of the inputs and on sound process engineering: an AI system cannot make unreliable sensor readings dependable, or make a model developed for one setup automatically work in another.

What the outdoor raceway demonstration showed
A 2026 study in Almeria, southeastern Spain, tested reinforcement learning to control carbon dioxide injection and regulate pH in an open raceway. The reported system operated in an 80 m² (about 860 sq ft) outdoor cultivation channel for an eight-day test under changing conditions. It used measurements that included temperature, sunlight, and dissolved oxygen, and the report says the controller regulated the process as conditions changed. Amarnath Krishnamoorthy’s account of the study, published by The Conversation and carried by Phys.org.
An open raceway is a shallow outdoor channel where culture circulates, typically using a paddlewheel. Photobioreactors are a different cultivation-system type; they should not be treated as interchangeable with raceways. The demonstration is evidence of a specific control task in a particular outdoor setup, not proof of commercial economics, long-term reliability, or routine performance at industrial scale.

What remains difficult
Sensor quality
Sensor fouling and measurement drift can compromise the data that a model or controller relies on. Monitoring systems therefore need dependable measurements and appropriate checks; adding AI does not remove the need to maintain and validate the instruments.
Different strains and reactor designs
Microalgae strains can respond differently to the same cultivation conditions. A model trained for one strain or reactor may perform differently with another, so transferring it requires validation rather than assumption. A result from an open raceway does not establish how well the same approach would work in a photobioreactor.

Scale and duration of evidence
The account describes much of the production the author has examined as remaining at laboratory or small-pilot scale, while noting that AI-based control has also been tested in some larger outdoor systems. An eight-day demonstration is useful evidence about a bounded operating test; it does not establish sustained performance or commercial viability.

AI offers researchers and operators another way to interpret data and respond to changing cultivation conditions. Its practical value will depend on robust sensors, models suited to the particular strain and reactor, and validation under the operating conditions where they are meant to be used. As Krishnamoorthy puts it, “AI should therefore be considered an additional tool for researchers and process operators rather than a replacement for conventional process engineering.”
