Egyptian geese are adaptable, mainly plant-eating birds: they feed on grasses, grains and crops when those foods are available, and sometimes consume animal matter. A 2026 study of 100 geese from Wetterau, Germany, found six ectoparasite and eleven endoparasite species. Those detections describe parasites found on or in sampled birds; they do not show that every meal causes infection or that the birds transmitted parasites to people.

What do Egyptian geese eat?

Egyptian geese are primarily herbivorous, but their diet is flexible rather than fixed. Agriculture Victoria lists grasses, seeds, stems, leaves, grains, potatoes and other vegetables, as well as worms and insects. A Dutch government risk assessment describes a similar generalist pattern: geese use locally available foods, from grass and aquatic plants to crops such as corn, sunflower seed, wheat, barley, oats, lucerne, groundnuts and potatoes. The mix varies with habitat, season and food availability.

In Wetterau, central Germany, researchers examined crop contents from 100 geese across four years. They found mainly plant material, particularly corn, grasses and grains, alongside animal remains including mussel fragments and annelids. Corn was especially prominent in the 2021/2022 sampling year. The authors relate that pattern to corn’s local availability and to sampling birds in or near corn fields; it is evidence of a local, time-specific food source, not a universal preference for corn.

Crop contents provide a snapshot of recently eaten food. Parasites can offer a different, indirect clue: some have life cycles that require an intermediate host, so their presence may be consistent with a bird having eaten that host. Neither kind of evidence establishes the exact meal through which an individual bird acquired an infection.

  • Factory-Attached Flocked Heads: Heads arrive flocked and attached at the factory, so each decoy comes out of the box already posed and there are no stems to fit, align or lose in the dark
  • Retractable Motion Bases: Oversized heavy-duty motion bases collapse fully into the decoy body for storage and transport, which is what makes this a throw-and-go pack with no bag to load or unload
  • No-Flake Paint: Ultra-realistic paint schemes with strong paint adhesion hold their coloration and detail season after season, so a spread set out in a wet field still reads as real geese
  • Goose Hunting Anywhere: Sized to blend with the standard honker decoys and full body decoys you already run, in a field spread in the west, a marsh edge in the east or a mixed rig beside a duck spread

Do Egyptian geese eat crops, and what can that mean for agriculture?

Yes. Grains, vegetables and other crops appear in the documented food sources, and the Wetterau crop-content study found corn and grains in sampled birds. Whether this creates meaningful agricultural damage depends on local conditions, including available food, crop type and growth stage, proximity to roosting sites, and the number of geese using a field.

A 2010 Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) risk assessment relayed a historical South African study’s mean annual yield loss estimate of 64.5%. The assessment reported the greatest losses in fields within 600 metres of roosting sites and in crops shorter than 25 centimetres. This is an attributed estimate from a specific South African study, not a current or typical loss rate for European farms. The NVWA also noted that systematic records of agricultural damage in Europe were lacking at the time.

Agriculture Victoria describes potential impacts in Victoria, Australia, including consumption of crop seedlings, trampling pasture and contamination from droppings, and classifies Egyptian geese as an extreme pest risk in that jurisdiction. That assessment applies to Victoria; it is not a universal legal status or a measure of damage in every region.

What parasites were found on or in the sampled geese?

The central German study identified six ectoparasite species (parasites living on the host) and eleven endoparasite species (parasites living inside it). Seven of the species were reported as first records for Egyptian geese in Europe. These findings add records for a defined sample and region; they are not a complete inventory of parasites across the species’ range.

Final Approach Last Pass Canada Goose Floater Decoys, 6 Pack
  • Carving by World Champion Carver Wayne Simkin
  • Rugged FA Construction and Durability as always!
  • One-piece design for added durability
  • Weighted keel with cord lock system

Five taxa were found in every study year and classified by the researchers as key species:

  • Anaticola asymmetricus
  • Anatoecus dentatus
  • Echinostoma revolutum
  • Notocotylus attenuatus
  • Polymorphus minutus

How can feeding be linked to parasite exposure?

Some endoparasites use invertebrates as intermediate hosts, connecting a bird’s feeding ecology with a possible route of exposure. Polymorphus minutus, for example, uses aquatic invertebrates as intermediate hosts. The nematode Hystrichis tricolor uses earthworms; its detection is consistent with the annelid remains found in some sampled crops.

These are ecological links, not a reconstruction of an individual bird’s infection. Finding a parasite and finding animal remains in the same study does not prove that a particular bird acquired that parasite from a particular meal.

Can Egyptian geese spread parasites to people?

Parasite detection in geese is not proof of transmission to humans. A separate 2023 German study of gastrointestinal parasites said the apparent potential for anthropozoonotic transmission (transmission between animals and people) seemed limited. That is a qualified assessment, not proof that transmission is impossible, and the available findings do not quantify a public-health risk from contact with geese or their droppings.

A 2023 report discussing Hystrichis tricolor raised the possibility that Egyptian geese could act as a reservoir and contribute to spillback affecting endemic waterfowl. Possible parasite exchange between bird hosts is a separate issue from demonstrated infection in people.

What the German findings can—and cannot—show

The Wetterau study brings diet and parasite findings together for 100 geese examined over four years. Its crop contents show what was present in the birds’ crops at sampling; parasite records show which parasite species were detected on or in those sampled birds. The two types of evidence help describe flexible feeding and parasite ecology in that setting, but they do not establish a universal diet, a worldwide parasite list, a specific meal-to-infection pathway or human transmission.

For population context, a nationwide German survey conducted from 2017 to 2022 estimated approximately 11,000 to 15,500 breeding pairs, according to Senckenberg Nature Research in 2026. That is a Germany-specific estimate tied to the survey period, not a count for all of Europe or the species’ native African range.
