Deep Pause is an early, pre-beta project that wants to let you freeze one Steam Deck game, hand its memory over to NVMe storage, and start another game without closing the first. It is not a released or vetted Decky plugin. As of early October 2026, the only figures for how well it works come from its creator.
What Deep Pause is trying to do
The creator’s Reddit post is titled “Deep Pause (Quick Resume).” It describes keeping a game session alive while suspending it. Most RAM and GPU-backed VRAM is reclaimed, and whatever must be preserved is moved to NVMe. When you want the game back, that state is restored.
That is the idea behind Xbox-style Quick Resume: several games parked at once, each ready to continue where you left it. The Deck’s built-in suspend handles one session at a time, and the Deck cannot do this multi-game switching today without something like Deep Pause.
The creator calls the project pre-beta. They single out memory offload, restore, recovery, and differences between games as hard reliability problems. The creator’s real-world identity and role are not independently verified. Steam Deck HQ identified the Reddit account as the project’s creator.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where the project stands
- Status: Steam Deck HQ reported on October 5, 2026 that Deep Pause was upcoming and not yet public.
- Vetting: The outlet cautioned that the plugin needs low-level system access and had not yet been made available for review.
- Not established: None of the sources reviewed give a release date, confirm which Steam Deck models are supported (LCD or OLED), or say whether an NVMe upgrade is required. They also include no independent reliability results.
Treat anything beyond this as unconfirmed. The project can change quickly, so check the creator’s own page for current status.
The reported numbers
| Figure | Who reported it | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 92.7% average physical memory reclaimed | Project creator, 2026 | Self-reported pre-beta testing across multiple real games; not an independent benchmark |
| 95.9% maximum reclaimed, leaving a little over 100 MB resident | Project creator, 2026 | Best case in some reported tests; self-reported |
| About 92–95% reclaimed (5–8% retained) | Steam Deck HQ, October 2026 | The outlet’s summary of the project’s expected result, not a separate test |
These numbers measure memory reclaimed. They say nothing about how fast a game restores, how much battery it uses, or how reliably it comes back intact. No independent head-to-head data on speed or battery exists, so be skeptical of any claim about either.

How it differs from what the Deck already does
Built-in suspend
Valve says SteamOS offers quick suspend and resume for getting in and out of games. That is device sleep. It does not show that the Deck can keep several full game sessions offloaded and ready to switch between. Valve’s Steamworks Steam Deck FAQ also warns: “The primary consideration is that Steam Deck will disconnect from Wi-Fi while suspended, so we recommend that you back up your save files before suspending.” Games can behave differently after resume, so save often. That applies even more to a pre-beta third-party tool.
Pause Games and DeckSuspender
The existing Decky Pause Games plugin sends SIGSTOP to game processes and SIGCONT to resume them. Its documentation says this halts CPU execution but leaves the RAM and VRAM the game uses allocated. It warns that some games misbehave after repeated pauses or lose input after resuming. DeckSuspender describes the same trade-off: processes keep their memory, and not every program works.

Deep Pause’s intended step forward is to free that memory by writing it to NVMe. In theory that allows more paused sessions at once. It also adds restoration and compatibility problems that a simple process pause avoids.
Steam Cloud Dynamic Sync
Dynamic Sync is about game files. For games that support it, Steam syncs changed files around suspend and across devices, then notifies the game when files change. It does not dump a running game’s process state to storage and restore it, so it is not a substitute.

Comparison at a glance
| Question | Built-in suspend | Pause Games / DeckSuspender | Deep Pause (as described) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sessions supported | One suspended session at the device level | Paused processes, with memory still held | Aims at switching among several |
| RAM/VRAM while paused | Not stated in the sources | Remains allocated | Most reclaimed, per the creator |
| Storage offload | Not stated in the sources | No | Yes, to NVMe |
| Known caveats | Wi-Fi disconnects; back up saves | Some games misbehave or lose input | Restore, recovery and per-game differences still being worked on |
| Availability | Shipped in SteamOS | Available as plugins | Pre-beta, not public |
What to do now
- Don’t expect a download yet. Nothing in the sources shows a public release.
- Wait for outside vetting before installing anything that needs low-level access to your system.
- Once it is available, test it with disposable sessions first. Keep saves backed up, and note how input, audio and network behave after a restore.
- If you want to pause a game today, the existing plugins work, but they hold memory and carry the compatibility warnings above.
