The headline is close, but the details matter. DroidDeck is an Android app that presents Valve’s Steam client in Big Picture mode on compatible handhelds, so it feels like a Steam Deck-style interface. It is not SteamOS and does not replace Android. Everything below comes from DroidDeck’s own homepage, FAQ, download page, installation guide and About page. None of it has been independently benchmarked or verified.
Is DroidDeck really SteamOS on Android?
No. SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based operating system. DroidDeck is an application that runs inside Android. According to its developers, it combines three things:
- an in-app Vulkan compositor that draws the Steam interface;
- a proot Linux environment, which lets Linux software run in userspace without replacing the host system;
- Valve’s ARM64 Proton release, with FEX-Emu translating x86 instructions, to launch Windows games.
The result aims at a SteamOS-like handheld experience. The “SteamOS” comparison describes how it feels, not what is installed. Your device keeps running Android, and you can leave DroidDeck like any other app.
The project’s homepage also says games execute on the Android device itself. DroidDeck is not a remote streaming tool like Steam Link, so the phone or handheld does the work.

Which devices does DroidDeck support?
GPU compatibility is the main constraint. The project FAQ lists these requirements:

This is the project’s own list, not an independent certification. If your device has a Mali GPU (common in many MediaTek-based handhelds), a Google Tensor chip or a Samsung Exynos Xclipse GPU, the project says it is not supported yet. Before buying a handheld for this purpose, check the FAQ for the current list. Also check that model’s price and availability, which the project does not cover.

How do you install it?
The project says root is not required. Its installation guide describes this general flow:
- Confirm you have about 4.5 GB of free storage. This is the guide’s own estimate for the Linux runtime and desktop assets.
- Download the ARM64 APK from the project’s download page. The page listed a package dated October 6, 2026 when this article was written.
- Sideload the APK, which means allowing installation from the source you downloaded it with.
- Open the app and let it install the Linux runtime.
- Sign in to your Steam account.
The Android 12+ child-process setting
On Android 12 and later, the guide says Android’s child-process restriction can kill Steam-related processes. Its workaround is to turn off Restrict child processes in Developer Options. This is the project’s recommendation. Behavior and menu wording can vary between manufacturers, and the setting changes a system safeguard, so follow the current guide and consider it a trade-off, not a free fix.

Licensing, credits and trust
The homepage describes DroidDeck as free and GPL-3.0 licensed. Its About page credits Valve, FEX-Emu, Box64, Turnip/Mesa and other projects, and it makes privacy and non-redistribution statements. These are the project’s claims. Package integrity, repository contents and license compliance have not been independently checked. Since you are sideloading, download only from the project’s official pages.

- The project does not claim, and nothing here shows, that every Steam game works. Windows titles depend on Proton, FEX-Emu translation and your GPU drivers, so results will differ game by game.
- Controls, ergonomics and battery behavior on the named handhelds were not evaluated.
Treat DroidDeck as a promising way to get a Steam Big Picture front end on recent Snapdragon hardware. Test it with the games you own before committing to it. If your device is on the Mali, Tensor or Xclipse list, wait for broader support.
