There is no single required distance between speed-limit signs on every U.S. road. Under the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), signs are placed where a posted limit changes, at the end of a speed-limit section to show the next limit, and beyond major intersections or wherever a reminder is needed. The applicable state or local standard can add requirements, so a specific road’s sign spacing depends on its jurisdiction and circumstances.

What the MUTCD says about speed-limit sign placement

Section 2B.21 of the MUTCD sets placement triggers rather than a universal repeat interval. It says: “Speed Limit (R2-1) signs, indicating speed limits for which posting is required by law, shall be located at the points of change from one speed limit to another.” The section also calls for a sign showing the next speed limit at the downstream end of a speed-limit section. Additional signs are installed beyond major intersections and elsewhere when needed to remind drivers of the applicable limit. See MUTCD 11th Edition with Revision 1.

  • At a limit change: The sign marks where the different posted limit begins.
  • At the end of a speed-limit section: A sign shows the next limit.
  • After major intersections or where needed: An agency may add signs to remind drivers of the current limit.

Those requirements do not specify that signs must recur every mile, half-mile, or another fixed distance on all roads.

Why two roads may have different sign spacing

Sign purpose, road layout, and the authority responsible for the road all matter. Reminder signs are placed where the road agency considers them useful, including beyond major intersections; their locations are not determined by a one-size-fits-all mileage rule. A speed study may inform the limit itself, but the factors considered in setting a limit should not be mistaken for a formula for sign-to-sign distance.

FHWA lists factors used in speed studies such as motorist speeds, traffic volume, road type and features, road setting, driveway and intersection spacing, sight distance, parking, pedestrian and bicyclist activity, crash history, and pavement condition. These help describe the road and inform speed-limit decisions; they do not establish a standard interval between signs. See FHWA’s Speed Limit Basics.

Which rules apply to a particular road?

This is a general U.S. explanation, not a finding that a particular sign is legally placed. FHWA identifies the MUTCD 11th Edition with Revision 1, dated December 2025, as the current national edition. States and local transportation agencies set limits on roads under their jurisdiction, and state manuals or local supplements can affect how the national provisions are implemented. For example, Caltrans says the CA MUTCD 2026 took effect January 18, 2026, and is in substantial conformance with the 2023 national MUTCD. Check the current standard for the state and road authority responsible for the location.

For a specific concern, identify whether the road is controlled by a state, county, city, or another authority, then consult that agency’s current traffic-control-device standards or contact the agency. A general MUTCD placement rule alone cannot establish compliance for an individual location.

A missing sign does not always mean there is no speed limit

Statutory limits may apply even when a speed-limit sign is absent. FHWA explains that statutory limits apply by law, while a city, county, or state agency may adopt a different posted limit after an engineering speed study. The applicable law depends on the state and road class, so sign spacing alone does not tell you the legal limit. See FHWA’s overview of speed limits.
