Yes, reports of Ninja Theory job losses and redundancies have emerged, but Xbox has not confirmed that the studio has closed. On September 22, Xbox said it would consult employees about a proposed closure after two agreements fell through, while continuing to explore other options. As of October 7, the outcome for the studio and its announced game Senua remains unconfirmed.
What is happening at Ninja Theory?
Xbox announced on September 22, 2026, that two separate agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through. It said it would begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward. The statement does not say the studio has formally shut down or that closure is inevitable. Xbox’s update, “Continuing Our Reset”, is the clearest official account of the current plan.
Have Ninja Theory employees been laid off?
Some employees have reported that their jobs are at risk or have ended. On October 5, Video Games Chronicle said it verified employee announcements on LinkedIn and named nine people who had confirmed their roles were at risk or already over. That is a set of reported individual cases, not a complete studio-wide layoff count. VGC’s report and PC Gamer’s October 5 coverage describe employee accounts.
There is an important distinction between being at risk and having definitively lost a job. PC Gamer notes that consultation is legally required in the UK before actual layoffs and does not mean every employee in consultation will be dismissed. The available reports therefore support saying that some staff have reported job losses and others face redundancy—not that every affected role has already been eliminated.

Why did the ownership plan change?
On July 6, Xbox said Ninja Theory had entered terms to join new ownership, with funding intended to complete and grow Senua. By September 22, Xbox said two agreements had fallen through and announced consultation on a proposed closure. The statements do not identify the prospective owners or explain why the agreements failed.

What happens to the next Hellblade game, Senua?
The game’s status has not been officially confirmed in the reporting available as of October 7. VGC describes Senua as the third game in the Hellblade series but does not report an official cancellation or confirmation that development will continue. It is therefore too early to call the game canceled—or to assume it will be completed.

What is confirmed—and what is not
- Confirmed: Xbox says two agreements for Ninja Theory fell through and consultation on a proposed closure will begin.
- Reported: Employees have announced that some jobs are at risk or have ended; VGC named nine individuals, not a complete total.
- Not confirmed: A formal studio closure, the final number of affected employees, the identity of any prospective buyer, or the fate of Senua.
Xbox’s September statement also cited 268 roles being eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. That figure is not a Ninja Theory-specific layoff count.
