Yes—the Mate 90 Pro Max has posted impressive results in selected game tests, including results reported as competitive with some Snapdragon phones and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. But that does not establish across-the-board chip parity. The key detail is the model: Huawei lists Kirin 9050 in the standard 12GB version and Kirin 9050 Pro in the Collector’s Edition. The reported gaming results should not be assigned to every configuration without confirming which phone was tested.
What the reported gaming tests show
IT Home’s October 4, 2026 report, citing Geekerwan testing, describes strong performance in particular games under particular rendering conditions—not a universal ranking of phone processors.
- Genshin Impact: The report gives a rendered resolution of 890p and power draw of 4.2 W, describing the experience as full-frame. It says the result outperformed some Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 devices and approached the iPhone 17 Pro Max with A19 Pro and some Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 configurations.
- Wuthering Waves: The report gives a rendered resolution of 648p. It does not provide an equivalent broad, controlled comparison across all rival phones.
These figures are secondary reporting of Geekerwan results, not a guarantee of performance at a phone’s native screen resolution or at identical graphics settings on every device. The reports do not establish a complete controlled methodology covering game builds and settings, exact phone variants and memory, ambient conditions, test duration, and repeatability. Read IT Home’s report; Gizmochina’s October 5 report also describes the results as efficiency in selected, well-optimized native games rather than a win in every benchmark.
Which Mate 90 Pro Max was tested matters
Huawei’s China-market specifications distinguish the two chip configurations: the standard 12GB Mate 90 Pro Max is listed with the Kirin 9050, while the Collector’s Edition is listed with the Kirin 9050 Pro. That distinction is essential when interpreting a performance report labelled simply “Mate 90 Pro Max.” Unless the tested edition is confirmed, the result cannot safely be attributed to both chips.

The official specifications list a 6.9-inch display with an adaptive 1–120 Hz LTPO refresh rate and HarmonyOS 7.0. A high refresh-rate display does not by itself mean a game renders at that frame rate: actual results depend on the game, settings, and device. Huawei’s specifications page identifies the variants.
What Huawei claims about Kirin 9050 Pro and gaming
Huawei says the Kirin 9050 Pro supports nine cores and 16 threads, and claims increases of 23% in multicore performance, 40% in GPU rendering performance, and 140% in NPU performance. Huawei also claims a 10–20% improvement in Mate 90 series gaming fluency and 25% lower energy use under heavy gaming load for its load-aware dynamic video technology. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent measurements or direct comparisons with Snapdragon or Apple chips.

Huawei advertises second-generation hardware ray tracing capable of rendering up to 55 million rays per second. Its series feature page also claims the Mate 90 Pro Max is the first phone to reach a 120-fps “extreme ray tracing” tier in Arena Breakout. Treat that as a Huawei claim specific to the named game, not as evidence that every ray-traced game runs at 120 fps. Huawei also promotes smart frame stabilization and intelligent HDR. How to interpret Snapdragon and Apple comparisons
“Rivaling” is a fair description of selected reported scenarios, but the available reports do not demonstrate that Kirin 9050 or 9050 Pro matches or beats all Snapdragon or Apple chips across games. A useful comparison needs to account for the exact phone and chip, game version, rendered resolution, graphics and ray-tracing settings, sustained frame rate and stability, power draw, and thermal behavior over a long session.

A separate GSMArena report gives a Geekbench 7 run averaging 1,317 single-core and 5,381 multicore points for a Mate 90 Pro Max. That is a synthetic CPU benchmark and does not establish gaming performance. GSMArena’s benchmark report compares the CPU result with older Snapdragon generations, not a controlled game test against the phones named in the gaming reports.
China-market configurations and launch prices

The reports make the Mate 90 Pro Max look promising for the tested games, particularly as an example of strong performance and efficiency in selected scenarios. They are not enough to predict results for every title, determine long-session thermal behavior, or establish broad superiority over Snapdragon- and Apple-powered phones. If gaming performance is the deciding factor, first confirm the edition and chip, then look for tests of the games you actually play at comparable settings.
