What happened to The Witcher: Monster Slayer?
The Witcher: Monster Slayer was a free-to-play, location-based augmented-reality role-playing game for iOS and Android, developed and published by Spokko. It brought monsters into a real-world mobile play experience, using a player’s surroundings as part of the game. The official Witcher site described the game as an AR RPG for mobile devices.
CD PROJEKT announced the phase-out in December 2022. Its regulatory filing said new distribution through Google Play and Apple’s App Store would end on January 31, 2023, and access would be disabled on June 30, 2023. The filing stated that disabling access would “fully shut down the project” on that date. CD PROJEKT S.A.’s December 6, 2022 current report documents the shutdown schedule.
What have fans brought back?
The revival is a community-built replacement for parts of the original service, not a restored official service. The project repository describes an effort to resurrect the discontinued game by reverse-engineering its Unity client, redirecting its connections, and building a custom server with ASP.NET Core. The project says it runs the original APK on a physical Android device.

In an October 2026 release post, the maintainers reported a build based on patch 1.1.116 that works offline with most features. They also identify exceptions and setup caveats. Those are project-maintainer reports, not independent test results, and do not establish full feature parity with the original service.
Is the revival official?
No. The shutdown was announced by CD PROJEKT, while the revival materials describe a community-run project. The sources available do not show a corporate relaunch, endorsement, official app-store release, or continuing support from CD PROJEKT or Spokko. Treat the revival as unofficial even if its reported gameplay is functional.

What do you need to try it?
The clearest documented fit is a physical Android smartphone. Community setup notes also say that a Google account that had the game installed at least once may be needed. These are current community-reported constraints, not permanent official requirements; the materials do not establish a specific supported phone model or minimum specification.
The available documentation does not establish iOS support for the fan revival. The original game’s iOS availability should not be taken as evidence that the replacement-server setup works on iPhone or iPad.

- Expect a work in progress. “Most features” is the maintainer’s description, not a promise that every original feature works.
- Check current project instructions. Setup details can change, and community prerequisites should not be mistaken for official device requirements.
- Understand the unofficial status. The project does not carry the official support or availability established for a publisher-operated service.
