Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns has brought a late-1980s arcade series back into view, helped by a crowdfunding campaign and renewed attention in Japan. Producer Kentaro Matsui recalled spending his teenage pocket money trying to win at the arcade version. The new game adds VR, but a headset is optional: it also includes Desktop Mode.
What is Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns?
Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns is the latest entry in a series that Kotaku describes as dating back to PCs and arcades in the late 1980s. Kotaku characterizes the game as simulated mahjong with four female characters and a clothing-removal mechanic tied to winning.
The arcade-era games stopped before the final clothing-removal state, according to Kotaku; the home release lets the scene continue. Developers reportedly retained the original characters and kept scenarios close to earlier games while updating the visuals and adjusting gameplay with newer titles such as Mahjong Soul and Bunny Garden in mind.
Why did the producer describe himself as devoted to the characters?
In an Automaton West interview cited by Kotaku, producer Kentaro Matsui recalled his teenage enthusiasm for the arcade series and the money he spent trying to win. Kotaku quotes him saying, “I was completely, hopelessly devoted to those girls.” His recollection connects the new release’s appeal to the memories of players who encountered the series in arcades.

Can you play without a VR headset?
Yes. Kotaku says the game supports VR but also offers Desktop Mode. The developers reportedly first conceived the new presentation for VR, then added Desktop Mode because many people do not own a headset.
| Mode | What it offers | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop Mode | Play on a computer without VR, according to Kotaku. | The option for players who do not own a VR headset. |
| VR mode | A spatial 3D presentation that lets players move around the scene, as described by Kotaku. | Choose it if you already have compatible VR equipment and want that spatial view. Kotaku does not specify supported headsets or PC requirements. |
What changes make the game more approachable?
Kotaku reports that this is the first game in the franchise available in English and that an auto mode was added to help newcomers to mahjong. The report does not detail the auto mode’s controls or explain how much of play it automates.
