A retired MiG-21 has been installed in front of the Main Building at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. News reports describe it as a twin-seat trainer variant; NITK says the display is intended to inspire students, though no measured impact has been reported.
Where is the MiG-21 displayed?
NITK’s procurement notice refers to the inauguration of a MiG-21 at the front side of its Main Building, and coverage of the unveiling places the aircraft in front of that building at the Surathkal campus. NITK is in Surathkal, Mangalore, Karnataka. The notice confirms the project and location, but does not provide detailed aircraft specifications. NITK official website
Is it a real MiG-21, and what variant is it?
Reports identify the installed aircraft as a retired MiG-21 twin-seat trainer, with two cockpits arranged one behind the other. Retired Air Marshal B.U. Chengappa described it as powered by an R-13 turbojet engine and fitted with delta wings. The report also says the aircraft could carry an external gun pod and bombs on underwing pylons. These details are attributed to Chengappa in the coverage; the available institutional notice does not confirm the configuration. The reports do not establish a more specific subtype or the aircraft’s serial number. The Hindu report

Why did NITK install a retired fighter aircraft?
Srinivasa Rao Kola, NITK’s professor in-charge of the NITK Aerospace and Defence Advanced Laboratory (NADAL), said the aircraft and a turboshaft engine installed behind the Main Building were expected to inspire students in NADAL, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), and other programmes. Board of Governors chairman M.M. Murugappan framed the installation as a reminder of discipline, values, and purpose. These are the institute’s stated aims, not evidence of a measured educational or motivational effect.

What is known about the MiG-21’s service history?
The October 6 report says the MiG-21 was developed in the 1950s, entered Indian Air Force service in 1963, and was manufactured under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at Nashik starting in 1966. It also says the type served in the 1965, 1971, and 1999 wars and remained in IAF operation until a final ceremonial flight in September 2025. These historical details are reported by the news coverage; the cited material does not independently substantiate them with IAF or HAL historical records. Chengappa also said the IAF acquired and operated more than 100 trainer aircraft of this kind.
